So for starters , its range is not short Secondly there is this called aerial refueling, Depending on the mission and position of the ship, F-35 only need 1 while F-18E/F need at least 3 The USN whole investment with EA-18G is to deny the enemy the ability to use hypersonic weapons at long range Case in point, the DF-21 claims 1100 range. The USN can easily operate its F-35C from 1000 without worrying about DF-21 The DF-21 like all missiles still need its sensors to lock in to target as well communication to make sure it stays on target Thats kinda hard to do when both your sensors and comms are being jammed.
