I wouldnt say they are playing catch up up China's DFs , ASBM ship and air launched are still very much massive which limits their effectiveness Russia's Kinzhal has proven to be very toothless and the Zircon is hasnt been used enough to gauge its effectiveness Both missiles are limited on what assets can use them The Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM) and AGM-183 ARRW unlike Russian and China designs, they are designed to flexible across the US military So its taking longer to develop Both China and Russia took short cuts to their designs and it shows

its likely going to max range test

@dextermorgan1 Its simple there are 4 programs in various stages and none have reached full operational and production All are being hampered by testing failures if at least one program was fully operational and in production ,there would no urgency with the others but the urgency is to get at least one The Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) was supposed to be it , then it ran into problems. Same with the ARRW , was fine than ran into problems if the next ARRW test knocks it out the park, the USAF will likely procure it in a limited number or full production which depends on the success of the HACM There are shorter ways but then they would be in same position as China and Russia As for what the black budget drones, AI and stealth and others but a shift in focus has change that

@Chuck_Hooks That is the magic question, how data was saved from that time There is the possibility that was stored on the storage mediums which was early 90s 3.5 inch floppy and Zip drive but its sound like no one bothered to move the data from those mediums to newer format So you are right, its just sitting somewhere in archive collecting dust so everyone starting from square one

@Chuck_Hooks Actually yes The whole Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty) nixed all short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) , medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) and Intermediate-range ballistic missile weapon systems and development both conventional and nuclear in 1988. There hasnt been a demand for that tech for 30 plus years in the US Since that treaty has been nixed There is now a renewed demand for that tech which is now basically a lost skill so its taking a while The USAF needs either the ARRW or HACM for its assets. The US is sharing the LRHW with Army for ships and subs but still working on their own program carrier aircraft The USMC only entry is the OpFires Ideally if the ARRW and LRHW can full operational and production, the sense of urgency will drop for the rest but something has to considered as credible weapon
