Actually 100 plus miles is considered long range and the longest range variant of the ATACMS reaches 192 miles which again is long range Lastly remember that the ATACMS range was capped by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty) Since then US withdrew its been making longer range variants of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) with ranges over 600 miles

This only highlights that USAF needs to reconsider its decision with the AMBER racks If anything , they need an advanced variant of the AMBER racks that can also use AIM-9s They also need to low cost missile that can be carried in large number but still cost effective against drones I would say Raytheon' Peregrine and Lockheed CUDA could be the answer they are looking for

Bet you the USAF is reconsidering the AMBER racks

@colbunkmust The critical fact that is that ATACMS was made to comply with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty) Both sides coined the term tactical ballistic missile to differentiate their arsenals as both were building various nuclear weapons Literally every weapon in the TBM had a nuclear warhead. The ATACMS goal was create a weapon without chemical or biological or nuclear payload but conventional that would simpler and easier to use on the battlefield The ATACMS exists out the normal ballistic missile S, M, IR and IC categories However its replacement , the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) is on track to become short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) with current increment improvements to range of 600 miles . There is possibility of further improvements that would push its range into medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) category

@colbunkmust No the point is that ATACMS exists in its own unique category

@jameshall1300 I just remember that USAF has tested the F-16 with Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS). It was able to use its targeting pod and cue 70mm APKWS to target missile/ The USMC also uses (APKWS) with its F-18s I believe the right combo would a missile like the Zuni rocket equipped with the AGM-114-L seeker carried in 4-5 pack launcher F-4 could carry 16 Zuni in 4 launchers
