Stealth against ships was always a real nightmare One aircraft uses an anti ship missile for a crippling blow while a second follows through with Quick Sink to finish the job Modern ASM is accurate enough to target specific points on ships A missile to the engine compartment will take all systems off line While striking the bridge is symbolic , the CIC is buried deep in the hull for that reason hence a strike to in the stern has the best chances

@jeffreywoodhead2682 The F-35A/C can carry 2x2000lbs internally 1 in each bay The F-35B can only carry it externally

Not likely The Quick Sink range is 50 miles which uncomfortably close when dealing with naval targets The better option is stealthy F-35s with JSMs strike first followed by second pair of F-35s carrying 2 QUICKSINK internally

Naval targets are never cheap Even the loss of a supply ship is critical blow to the enemy Remember, the USN starved the IJN by cutting off their supply lines Japan got their oil from the US till the war started then they stole it from places they captured The USN cut those lines off and IJN gradually lost the ability to operate effectively Quicksink in parallel with a ASM does the job much cheaper The key with the first strike is hitting a vital area so the enemy's defenses cant react to the Quicksink, thats either a strike in stern or a strike by the sensors to blind the target long enough The US should be trying to improve sensors so missile can target precise areas

@ThirdLawPair While the QuickSink is cheap the US military should revisit the JSOW-ER The JSOW uses the BROACH which is designed for hard-target penetration but most importantly the JSOW-ER has considerably longer range up to 300 miles Improve the BROACH with larger tandem warheads but most important, upgrade the sensors so the missile can target specific areas of the ship A strike to the stern has great chance knocking out the engines completely or a target below the bridge to knock the bridge as well CIC below No more guess work with where the missile hits

@papanam4267 The problem with the QuickSink is ts range is 50 miles. That's well within range of most ships defenses and only usable if the target defenses are down You need something that can precisely strike the ship in a vital area first then follow through with QuickSink

@JarrodFrates Keel breaking will cripple the ship structurally but the ship will remain afloat and functioning The Quicksink test was against a light freighter We havent seen how it performs against warships
2
@goobfilmcast4239 The X-47B is differently something the USN needs to be bring back
2
@kameronjones7139 The LRASM cant be carried internally by the F-35
1
@Synthmilk Externally not internally The F-35B why the US military should revisit the JSOW-ER It would give the F-35B a much needed offensive punch against land and sea targets Joint Strike Missile (JSM) weights 900lbs with 260lbs warhead and 300 mile range The JSOW-ER weights 1100lbs with BROACH warhead designed for hard-target penetration with 300 mile range BROACH is better against ships and bunkers
1
@ThirdLawPair The problem with 50 miles is the potential for counter attack
1
@asterik917 The F-35A/C can carry 2000lbs bombs internally The F-35B can only carry 1000lbs
