Its not about range its about armor Body armor has become common place and easy to get for basically anyone 5.56 rounds are ineffective 7.62 is slowly becoming ineffective 50 cal will penetrate any body armor as well light to medium armored vehicles but 50 weapons are extremely heavy 338 is a happy medium because its powerful enough to defeat armor and damage light armor but still light enough to be carried by squad level on down

@jaypee389 Its about peer level engagements with Chinese and Russian forces where body armor is excepted Secondly the point of the 6.8 is that 5.56 were failing faster than normal as they cant handle the strain from sustained M855 use

@jaypee389 Hence the need for something that can massive outrange the PKM which the MG-338 does but at the end of the day its not enough The Pike 40mm grenade munition and Carl Gustaf Guided munition can hit targets excess of 2000 yards but they are not rapid fire The XM25 CDTE should be revisited and upgraded to able engage targets precisely at 2500 yards rapid fire The original model range of 500-765 yards, I completely understand why it was not liked but if they can get it out to 2500 yards and keeping weight down, it could be valuable asset

SAW II MG sounds better Either way, its great improvement but they still work on making M2 lighter

@xxxlonewolf49 It was not the DShK, it was the PKM and yes both are why regulars forces are getting the Carl Gustaf replace M72 and AT4 as it can match both the DShK and PKM range The 338 does allow them to equal range but still needed some to resolve the issue in one shot

@xxxlonewolf49 That would be wrong The PKM not the DhSk was most common used by insurgent forces Special forces use the MK-48 Mod 0/1 not the M240 Mk-48 range is 875 yards as it has the shorter barrel vs the PKM range of 1094

@jaypee389 The problem with 20mm is that there were doubts that it could produce lethal enough fragmentation per round 25mm on up no issue about producing lethal enough fragmentation

its pretty simple to understand Despite all efforts, the lightest 50 cal machine comes at 53lbs with a mount there was simple no way to make 50 cal machine gun light enough to be truly man portable So they started looking at calibers between 7.62mm up to 50 cal to see if they could find a happy medium I wouldnt be surprise if we started see more sniper and big game rounds being tested for use in machine guns to help deal with the increase use of body armor but honestly they need to dust of the XM25 CDTE fast
