There was never any doubt Canada would go F-35

In 2015, the F-35A price was 102 Its currently 77

Development is very long expensive process which most countries dont want You need engine development, air frame and avionics thats just too time consuming for most

Jason Smith It just proves that the hype was wrong F-16 was not designed to for air to ground initially but has been a dependable workhorse after successive upgrades The Block 60 can loiter longer and SDB make much more lethal for air to ground support The F-14 was carrier plane and had to operate within the constraints of a carrier. Its abilities in dogfighting was limited but it could still hold its own. the concept behind was fleet defense. Now if the SDB program hadn't been delayed, then the USN may have considered keeping the F-14 as SDB are lighter than the Mk80 series and more can be carried and the F-14 has slightly longer range than the F-18 The principle problem with the F-14 was not any of the problems listed. The problem was weight. If the Sec of Defense at the time Dick Cheney hadn't blocked the F-14 but instead ordered them to fix the weight problem. Just like the F-16 E/F Block 60 is quantum leap over F-16 A/B Block 10 The F-14 could have been much better Sorry but with 100 plus kills in the C model and the E still the best strike platform , there is nothing wrong the Eagle Flankers claims advantages over the F-15 but in reality most of those were technological. unlike the USN the USAF has actually put the cash in to keep the F-15 competitive

Brock gowling-hammond The F-35 will work , just the mistakes that were made can not be repeated. First Congress ordered all the services to combine their programs, probably the biggest mistake in the program Second the DoD did not order companies to make complete products Like the YF-22 and YF-23 were essentially complete products The X-32 and X-35 were not example , they ran into weight issues with the F-35B, because the X-35 was not designed with bays. Lockheed did the same thing with the F-117, the preceding plane was built to test the concept and the F-117 was built as a fully functionally plane, The key different here is that the F-117 was strictly USAF project and was also a black project. Finally Lockheed tried out new and untested methods for the F-35 Now I will give them the fact that so far , all they have had is engine failure

KarpKomet USAF tactics are take them out at long range before they have a chance to get their weapons in range

@TheeYellowDart The factor here is that Canada doesnt have time Now if they want while they are working on the F-35 contract, this would be a fine time to get the ball rolling on building up their capability to do so so for the F-35s eventually replacement , it would be a made in Canada aircraft but at the same time 6th generation aircraft are the most technological complex aircraft Granted the US makes it look easy but they have the money to do so well as Area 51 ,plus giants like Lockheed, Boeing, and Northrop
2
The irony of them waiting this long is they get the F-35 Block 4 considerably cheaper than if they had brought in 2010
2
If Canada wanted to go it alone, it would cost more than F-35 just in state up costs Secondly it takes 10-15 years to develop 4th to 5th gen They simply don't have the time to do so
2
Canada' doesnt have the budget for both
2
FrakU2 yup, no one can afford to let the other guy get within weapons range and if they do , they better have the weapons to deal with them While TVC is impressive, its still falls victim to high obs and loal weapons

Not likely modern fighter development takes much longer
1
@SMac86 Modern fighters take much longer depending on complexity
1
In 2015, the cost 102 its 77 right now which is the same many 4.5 gen aircraft
