  2.  @etzwei7994  The XM25 was 25mm round but the larger 30mm has better lethality Ultimately to be of use its range needs to be at least 1300 yards which allows to defeat PKM teams as well as some RPG teams The XM109 range is 2000 yards but weighs 33lbs The addition of 338 weapons does allow for precision engagement at longer ranges but has no counter defilade engagement against threats hiding behind obstacles Hence why a 1300 yard weapon with counter defilade ability is needed

Bigger round allows for better lethality down range. 546 yards is not effective weapon when PKM teams can engage you from 1000 yards away and RPGs team 1400 yards The point is the give the troops on the ground a weapon that allows them to effective counter enemy attacks at much greater ranges

  4.  @etzwei7994  The point is that troops on the ground need an effective weapon with long range to deal with modern threats. The XM25 used bullpup design which is not common to the US miiltary while the XM109 and SSR 30mm uses the normal AR style step up which I 100 percent guarantee will make it more popular with the troops as it has much more normal feel to it While the XM109 is still a prototype, the point still stands. the XM109 range is what the SRSS should be aiming for Case in point, a FPV drones can reach speed of 50 to 100 mph. from 546 yards , you have just 22 seconds if the drone is coming at you at 50mph, at 100, its just 11 seconds At 2000 yards away even at 100 mph, you still have 40 seconds to deal with the threat For counter defilade targets, again longer range is asset The M320 cant be aimed ,its has to be lobbied on target. Reducing the XM109 weight to manageable levels isnt that hard The Barrett M82 weighs 32lbs while Barrett MRAD with the longest barrel only weighs 15lbs The XM109 weighs 33lbs. The same machining can be applied, the use of aircraft grade aluminum and titanium for the frame Carbon fiber and composites every where else
