  12. Gorbachev opened the door, and Yeltsin fell through it, after which Putin closed it again. Yeltsin mismanaged the transition, no doubt in large part due to endemic corruption and a failure to sweep away the old guard.

Stalin annexed Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bessarabia, 20% of Finland, and moved large Russian minorities into the nominally sovereign republics, and ethnically cleansed Crimea if its indigenous Tatars. He also established a satellite system in eastern Europe, which is also a form of colonisation.

  22. The, system he inherited was dysfunctional. It was stagnating. He tried to carry out necessary reforms. He is a great man, because when the day comes that Russians do gain their freedom, they will remember Gorbachev as the man who started it all.

  31. It probably is. If you come from St Petersburg, you should have some finnic or baltic DNA in you. Estonia and Finland are very close to you. My friend in England has some Spanish and finnic blood, and I've got a bit of Norwegian in me, so people and peoples do get around a bit.

  47. This is true. I'm British, and I remember singing "We on the war" as a kid. Now I can acknowledge the great sacrifice of the USSR, but this is tinged by knowing that the same USSR was an aggressor state itself, as the citizens of poland, the baltic and Moldova will testify to, and the rest of the countries which were forced to be satellite states afterwards. Militarily impressive, but morally dubious.
