Many of the great Russian literary figures of the past were either imprisoned, exiled or murdered by the Russian government too, including Dostoievsky.

@KolyaUrtz manipulation of historical memory, classic 1984. We know ww2 began in 1939 with the Soviet-Nazi invasion of Poland and annexation of 8 further European countries in 1940, you not so much.

 @scotti.6433 Russia never expunged the soviet ruling elite. Even after the coup against yeltsin, the coup plotters went back to their day jobs.

@RoadVZeon it was the most read online book in Russia in 2022. It was written by a guy who worked in propaganda in Britain in ww2. He describes the techniques used; newsspeak, doublethink etc. You should read it.

@Mad_Dog_of_the_Regime it does. 1984 was actually inspired by a book Orwell reviewed called WE, by Yevgeny Zamyatin, a Russian author writing at the time of the Russian civil war, in 2022, shortly after his death. The books are very similar.

 @jeanivanjohnson Actually, people don't generally have strong views one way or the other. Russia is a bit far away.
