In my experience, I live in Russia, the strongest supporters of the war are generally in good jobs, nearly always work for the state, and suffer from what I can only describe as a rejection of morality, as well as having a dog eat dog attitude to international relations, a dangerous combination indeed..

He and the other school children went to the town square where they watched other children parading in various military attires, and heard a speech from thrir Duma deputy, who told them Russia is great, and it beat Japan, not the western allies. Life in Russia.

  13. They have very strange ideas about things. They are taught at school that Russia is great, but the west, jealous of its greatness, always tries to keep it down. And so Russians lap up Putin's trope, that Ukraine is a tool of the west to weaken a resurgent Russia, thus making it fine for them to destroy it.

  16. ​ @davidgantenbein9362 Social conservatism, patriarchy, the masculine principle, sacrifice for the motherland, the strong leader principle, outgrouping selected minorities, ultranationalism, antiliberal/antidemocratic, belief in a lost glorious past, mass movements; Russia exhibits all these traits. Its youth army has a million members, for instance.

  17. ​ @Jens-Viper-Nobel living in Russia as I do, I can assure you that a great many Russians actively support the war, and take some pleasure from the destruction. There is a great deal of resentment against all things western, which basically is the scapegoat for the problems the country has. The ability to combine a neo-imperialist worldview with a victim narrative lies at the heart of all that is playing out in Ukraine.
