  3. The USSR was mainly responsible for the destruction of German, Rumanian and Hungarian land forces in Europe. This is a fact, and extremely significant for allied success. However, 50% of axis strength in GDP terms was Japan and Italy, and the western allies and China destroyed most of their forces. The other important contributions of the western allies were; equipping the red army, esp. trucks and logistics, forcing Germany to defend her airspace from allied bombing, leading to the red air force gaining air superiority in 1943, and destroying axis sea power.
