That's what the Ottomans thought. But their huge territories could not compensate for their economic weakness, and in spite of genocidal behaviour the empire fell in a lost war trying to regain former glory.

What a great friend for anyone to have Bill Browder is.

Did Hitler take your advice? It didn't get him very far.
2
Sad because many young people want a different Russia, a western orientated Russia, and they will suffer for the crimes of old men.
2
We think Russia is the most dysfunctional state in the world. Does that make you proud?
2
I don't believe it. The USSR had a GDP of 12.4 trillion dollars in real terms. Russia's GDP is 1.5 trillion dollars. Like the Ottoman Empire the backwardness and size of the Russian economy will cause its empire to collapse in a lost war with the aim of restoring its former glory.
2
Oh no Italy! Didn't you learn what happens to fascists once before. We don't want to have to liberate you again. It's such a drag.
2
The US has paid 250 billion for rebuilding iraq, but russia wouldn't pay a dime unless it were conquered first.

Peter 1 changed the name from Muscovy to Russia to give him a historical claim to further territories. Pure politics of course. Rus was a vangerian kingdom which later assimilated with the east slavs.

Reparations bot old boy.

That's not factually correct. The former soviet economies all recovered in the late 90s, Putin arrived as the economic crisis was over, and developed much quicker than Russia's thereafter. You just have to look at the economic data for Poland, the Baltics and Czechia to see how badly Russia has performed under Putin. Russia has never addressed its corruption problem, and now it has an access to technology and inward investment problem too, not to mention the fact that it still heavily relies on fossil fuel exports for which demand will decline significantly in the future, and has lost its most profitable markets for those fossil fuels, which make up 40% of its income. It's foreign policy decisions have been particularly disastrous. The foolish decision to annex Crimea in 2014 has led to economic stagnation, and the economic consequences of invading the rest of Ukraine in 2022 have caused such an economic shock that trading on the Russian stock market has been suspended, and key economic data is no longer published for obvious reasons.

@stevea2909 the US did not seek to annex the territory and eliminate the culture, but to remove a dictator with a track record of invading his neighbours. The US also has different governments with different policies. I disapprove of the Bush administration, but unlike Russia administrations change.
1
How would Russia be fine? It is heavily dependent on fossil fuel Imports. It would lose billions in revenue, and its revenue is already low.
1
They are proud of that.
1
It will if it loses the war, and it knows that. Then demands for urgent political and societal reform will come, and Russia, as you say, will be in a better position than in 2021.
1
They are powerless to stop him. He increased spending on internal security by 50% this year, army spending increased by 35%.
1
Between 2003 and 2014 the US spent 220 billion dollars on rebuilding Iraq. I don't know the extent of the damage the war caused, but that's how much the US spent to 2014.
1
Don't you respect Browser's integrity and courage? I wonder what qualities you respect in people.
1
Who's that propagandist on state Russian TV who wears sci-fi clothes and has a villa on Lake como in Italy. The guy who loves spending time in the west and says its satanist. Name begins with S. Remind me again?
1
In what sense? Too hopeful maybe.
1
I wouldnt punish the young generation for the crimes of their elders. They deserve the chance to show they represent a different Russia, and Russia can live respectfully alongside its neighbours.
1
The west is the best.
1
Sounds like he fitted well into russian business culture.
1
But you are a weak country. The USSR swallowed you whole.
1
Your cynicism has no limits. Russians are known for being cynical as we see from the attempt to freeze to death millions of ukranian women and children in the hope of manufacturing a refugee crisis in Europe. Truly sickening.
1
You should tell the UAF that. They don't seem to have read the script.
