  1. Crimea was an autonomous region until 1945, not part of Russia. Stalin deported the Crimean Tatars to Siberia in 1945 and then made it part of the Russian SSR. In 1956, Krushev made it part of the Ukranian SSR as it had no border with Russia, unlike Ukraine. From 1785 to 1917 it was part of the Russian Empire, as was Warsaw and central Poland, priior to that it was the Crimea Khanate from 1240 to 1785, home to the Crimean Tatars.
