  1. Perhaps we should stop deluding ourselves that we can a) influence Russian public opinion b) that Russian public opinion is a strong influence on Putin's behaviour towards Ukraine and the west in general.

  2. I think you will find plenty of historical examples of Russian westward expansion into Europe,1853, 1939-1940 1945. NATO of course did not exist then, but it has made that westward expansion harder for Russia to achieve.
