@tilmanmai This was Stalin's work of course He implanted Russian populations in the Republics (then Soviets) to make it harder for independence movements to develop. This also involved deporting non-Russisns from Ukraine. In spite of the heavily ethnically Russian population in Crimea it voted for independence in 1991, as did all Ukranian Oblasts.

@tilmanmai prior to the Russians winning it from the Ottomans by right of conquest, it had never been Russian. The Ottomans had held it since 1240,and they took it fro. the Tartars. Crimea is a Russian colony.

@classicgalactica5879 it was a joint effort, but a warning to modern-day russia about how important foreign support is to the defender. Russia has no control over how great that support will be, which means it has taken a great risk.
