  1. Yes, the English high nobility had French names; Neville, Percy, Mortimer, Beaufort, Percy, de Pole, even Robert de Bruis of Scotland(anglicsied Robert the Bruce) etc. They were all of French descent.

  2. ​ @seramerius  They were basically French by then, Rollo had established the duchy 150 years before, and they were joined in the invasion by the Celtic Bretons and Flemish too. A multinational force indeed.

  3. ​ @Hugh_Morris The Normans in the centre were joined by the Bretons on left flank, and Flemish on the right flank. Henry Holland who commanded one of thd Lancastrian battles at Towton in 1462 had that name for a reason.

  6. The average person was safer. Before the revolution peasants were at the mercy of the aristocracy and priesthood, both known for their violence and persecution.

  9. In fairness to the French Revolution, 5,000 people were guillotined in the Terror. In the Red Terror of Stalin 900,000 people were executed. With regard to our revolution, 2% of the male population was killed. 15,000 died in the Spanish Inquisition, not nice, but less than one might think. Something propagandistic about it all.
