@DABmonger It was appalling to hear. He clearly knows nothing about European history save for Hitker's invasion of the USSR, in which Ukraine and Belorus were occupied.

The situation started in 1991 in Putin's mind.

Thank you for your evidence based point. Refreshing.

@therobertspot4840 It led to world war 2, for example. It threatens Europe's economy and security. If you're American, that's your main strategic partner in terms of trade and global security.

@mikeg2939 He's an imperialist, and he regards Ukraine as an integral part of his empire. Unlike other empires, the Russians see the colonised bits as part of their own identity. They don't have an empire, Russia is an empire. And so he regards neither Ukraine nor Ukranians as having their own identity, and he calls their language a Russian dialect, and them "little Russians".
1
@rj41975 the Russian empire, the soviet union isn't his thing. It recognised Ukranian identity, and the republics were nominally sovereign, and the union referendum in 1991 would have committed that union to respect for individual human rights, it was on the ballot paper.

Agree, Russian imperialism goes a long way back. NATO wasn't formed till 1949, and then to check Stalin's expansion into areas never controlled by the Tsars.

He thinks he understands international relations, but he clearly has no idea of eastern Europe's experience of Russian imperialism, not to mention the fact that many of our European neighbours were satellite states of a repressive economically backward system.

@tubthump Then your government has failed. NATO now stands 50 km from your second city, and the Baltuc is now a NATO lake.btw. Europe treated Russia as a strategic partner, and invested heavily in the Russian economy, bringing hundreds of thousands of well-paid jobs. Unfortunately, you have a government stuck in 1942.
1
@adambrady8236 NATO didn't station troops in esstern Europe until the Crimea annexation. Google it and learn sth.

@felixkommey2505 Or the Venetians, or the Genoese. What's your point? The hansa has been gone for centuries.
1
If you can't tell the difference, I pity you.
1
@felipe-vibor We're not going to do that. It would set a terrible precedent for other dictators.
1
Russia doesn't do democratic ekections
1
As a defense against the USSR and now an aggressive Russia, and China.
1
@jiridrapal7512 True, if they attack her, but they want to defend their borders against her and have never attacked Russia.
1
@jiridrapal7512 we weren't defending ourselves. We were ridding the world of an aggressive actor who launched 2 wars of aggression against Iran and Kuwait. I think it was unwise to do it because it allows guys like Putin to engage in whataboutism.
