@mikek0135 the Russian Federation and Ukraine were formed at the same time, atthe dissolution of the Soviet Union. Ukraine formally existed as a separate state for 3 years, between 1918 and 1921.

@akakiiakakievich1646 Kievan Rus ceased to exist. Something which no longer exists cannot become something else. That is called logic. New state forms emerged as a direct consequence of the Mongol invasions and Frankish/Byzantine influences. One of these state forms was Muscovy.
