@@sunnyjesus what were the options given in the 2014 referendum? Yes, thats right; be part of Russia or autonomous. Being part of Ukraine wasn't a choice offered. The real results were leaked after. 30% turnout, so not only was it in breach of the Ukranian constitution, but russian law too.

@fantozzi2444 this, isn't true. Ukraine is very fertile, it was called the breadbasket of the USSR, and was an important industrial region too for the USSR. For example; Russia still can't make powerful engines for new warships, as the factories and technologies are in ukraine.

@moralfuxery russia and russian backed separatists took advantage of the political vacuum in Kyiv when yanukovitch was removed. Its not a secret. What putin really feared was that Ukraine's western turn would put the lease of Sevastopol naval base to Russia at risk. Putin considers the port vital for Russian power projection, as a good old-fashioned imperialist.
