They withdraw their labour to demonstrate their true value. When they are not working, it becomes rather clear that their work is indeed very valuable, and their living standards therefore deserve to be protected.

@Tom quite the contrary. Enlightened countries are rather successful. Investing in your workforce and making them feel valued actually does wonders for productivity. Ever wondered why Britain's is low?

@Tom the railways are infrastructure. It is not the purpose of infrastructure to make profit, but to allow the economy to function better. The railway was nationalised because it can't be run on a profit basis. It would collapse.

Why shouldn't he earn a decent whack. He is head of a big organisation, it just happens to be a working class one. If you compare his salary with corporate and charity heads you will find its actually rather modest for someone in his position. He earns around the same as a school headmaster/mistress.

He said he wants redistribution of wealth from dividend/shareholders to workers pay packets and pensions. That's quite political.

@doomjuan4892 the trade unions used to be part of the triumvirate of employers, government and workers representatives. Thatcher cut the workers out because she didn't think they should be heard. Now our society is out of balance with food banks and 40 percent of the population in substandard living conditions. Perhaps we ought to listen once more. Union leaders are generally pretty smart, and bring another perspective and interest to the table.
