  8.  @gracieallen8285  A somewhat distant cousin of mine was complaining about Bernie endorsing Hillary instead of Jill Stein. I pointed out that Bernie said he would endorse the nominee, and asked why he was so upset. The answer: I thought he would endorse Stein, anyway. I then noted that you can't like someone for being honest and get mad when he keeps his word.

  13. The major officials describing themselves as democratic socialists are probably a little bit to my left, but I would rather have someone to my left so the compromise position might be what I actually want. That is how you negotiate, not by starting out to your own right.

  21.  @chriscurlett4548  TANF is over $1000 in New Hampshire. TANF and SNAP combined are over that Alaska, New York, and California. Daycare for two children in PA is over $1500/month. Housing subsidies are easily worth more than that in high rent areas. And these are just from the six programs that we know about. He has a list of 125 programs that people have to forfeit if they take his money, but he has only mentioned six.

  22.  @thewreckedup  I did read the original, and it doesn't change the fact that he uses a regressive tax to pay for it, and the poor either don't get it at all, or they don't get the full thousand. At best, it is hitting the gas and the brakes at the same time. At worst, it screws over the poor.

He showed me who he is when he said that his version is either/or, he showed me when he picked a consumption tax rather than taxing the rich, he showed me when he told Dave Rubin that he ultimately wants to get rid of the existing social safety net (Grover Norquist called it "shrinking government to the size where it can be drowned in the bathtub"), and he showed me when he told Ben Shapiro that the magic of a thousand bucks a month is that it is below the poverty level for one person. He is a libertarian wolf in leftist clothing, and if he is right, his solution will result in a world with a few trillionaires and everyone else scraping by on less than the poverty level for one person. That is why I am so critical of Andrew Yang.

  24.  @keirenle  The VAT "works" because the poor can't fight back. We used to have an income tax that was much higher in this country, and the effective rate for the richest 400 families was twice what it is now. Corporate taxes used to be 32% of all federal taxes. Now, it's 9%. Don't give me that nonsense that he has no choice but to use a regressive tax to pay for it. It can be done if only we have the will.

My state exempts groceries, clothing, medicine, and diapers, and has some excise taxes, including luxury items.   26.  @keirenle  That may be your goal, but your policy positions make those things worse. Supporting a regressive tax makes inequality worse. Supporting a UBI that is neither universal nor basic income (and the people who get left out are the poor) makes inequality worse. I just point out facts.

Second of all, progressive and regressive taxes are not defined by absolute dollars, but as a percentage of income. Jim Justice, on the other hand, does not have that popularity, and given his experience in the Legislature, I think that he would be better suited to fighting for the people in Charleston.

  40.  @myklfan9738  As Aaliyah once said, "Age ain't nothing but a number." I worked at a retirement community for an internship in seminary, and I saw 100-year-olds who looked 70 and vice versa. Watch a master's track meet sometime, and see how people twice my age (and maybe twice yours, who knows?) can get going. Bernie at 77 is more vibrant than people decades younger.

In the debates, he yelled a lot, and his ad was him staring at the camera, in silence with no background music, with him throwing a rock into a pond at the end. After he dropped out, he ran for the Libertarian Party nomination, losing out to Bob Barr.

  46.    Every plan has a transition. Bernie's is four years (gradually reducing the eligibility age) and the House version is two. The problem with Warren's proposal is the second bill. You only get one bite at the apple.

  48.  @Nighthowler56  Well, the big difference this time is that there are only two or three candidates (Bernie, Warren, or maybe Brown if he snaps out of the scared liberal routine) who are running for the left, and a dozen or so running for the establishment wing. Also, remember that Bernie started the campaign with name recognition lower than the margin of error and got to 45% with the entire party apparatus against him. Even if they try this time, it won't work. Fewer debates? He is at or near the top in name recognition. Corporate funding? He can raise more money from the people. Superdelegates? No say in the first round.
