I am dismayed how many soulless individuals have jumped to the possibility of suicide in the absence of any evidence to that effect or without taking into consideration how difficult it would be to drive into the lake at that particular spot. This tendency is indicative of the nadir we've reached as a society.

  5.  @bopcentral7425  Absolutely false. There is a steel guardrail at this location that has prevented any car from going into the Keating Channel for the past 65 years. This was a freak, head-on collision in which one vehicle must have been travelling well over the speed limit to cause the result seen. The responsibility is the driver's, not a nanny society where the government has to look after those too irresponsible to look after themselves. What is the city supposed to do? Put barriers between all lanes of oncoming traffic so head-on collisions can't happen? Maybe they should lay tracks for cars so drivers don't have to steer, or have self driving cars that totally eliminate the need for drivers in the first place and which only the elite could afford?

  8.  @niagarajoe4402  Former Toronto Harbour Police Lifeguard here. Reptile Diving Reflex is more common in children but even so, no one has ever been resuscitated after more than an hour without vital signs, other than Jesus Christ.

  14.  @User56789hh  It's not the guardrail's fault someone was exceeding the speed limitations by such an extent that they lost control of their vehicle, crossed over the centreline, collided, head-on, with an oncoming motorist and careened another ten metres into the lake.

I'll bet I've spent more time in that immediate neighbourhood than anyone else here and I've never seen anything like a single car going off the road into the lake at that exact spot, however, I was rear ended at the intersection of Cherry and the Lakeshore, about a hundred yards away, which totalled my Toyota pickup. Turns out, this also was a two car collision.

  26. Not likely at that location. No guarantee a car could reach the lake from there with the guardrail and rough ground in-between. Lots of other much easier places. More likely a heart attack or stroke. Lot of those going around.

  38.  @JohnthemapguyADHDMe  I'm old enough to remember when the Harbour was filled with the terminal warehouses ocean going ships delivered to from all parts of the world. Some were converted to film studios, others became the Pier4 centre or Harbourfront or the Distillery District or Turtle Island Recycling or the "Cruise Ship Terminal". The silos are defunct and ALL warehouses are gone. Food, produce and manufactured goods no longer arrive in Toronto by ship. It's far more economical to unload containers in Halifax, Quebec City or Vancouver and transport them by road and rail to their destinations than to bring freighters up the St Lawrence to Toronto. There's a saying mariners have to describe this reality: "Nothing goes to weather like a Peterbilt".

There's not a SINGLE warehouse left to receive them!!!  Don't bother cutting and pasting more irrelevant wikipedia rubbish about total Great Lakes shipping or what China brings to "the lower St Lawrence". Toronto get's next to NOTHING by ship. No electronics, automobiles, textiles, livestock, petroleum, chemicals, manufacturing equipment, paper, grain, lumber, etc etc etc.  Just the transfer from Hamilton by St Lawrence cement and whatever's left of Redpath. That's it.  You're not old enough to remember when Toronto was an actual working port and clearly not smart enough to have learned.

Contrary to your erroneous statement, not ALL of Toronto Harbour's shoreline is man-made. Furthermore, the Leslie Street Spit (Now named Tommy Thompson Park) was originally intended to become the site of a new Toronto Airport (and may yet do so). That plan was suppressed to control real estate speculation in the immediate area until such time the landfill becomes sufficiently large and compacted enough to lay tarmac. Finally, the vast majority of fill is excavated earth from the foundations of Toronto's skyscrapers and NOT the rubble from "old buildings that were torn down". My Grandfather built his home on the lakeshore, my Father did the same and I, as well, continue to live on Toronto's waterfront. I've kept boats in Toronto harbour, on the spit, on the Humber, at Pier 4 and at Cherry Beach since before you were born and have been in the marine industry here since the 1960's. I've forgotten more about Toronto's waterfront history than you will most likely ever know. "My oh my" yer a$$.
