This discussion was a joke. Not counter viewpoints, no studies brought up, no statistical analysis done. Very unproductive.

Taxes has to go up because our federal revenue is about equal to all of healthcare spending. The money has to come from somewhere.
2
" that free college and free healthcare for all could be implemented without crushing the economy is a pipe dream." Very true. Healthcare is 1/6 of the overall economy. To think we can just fund it without drastically changing the economy is asinine. Raising taxes that much and increasing government spending that much will lead to an economic recession.
2
At this point all you can do is troll this old fool. He lost, people voted for republicans, they have not momentum. This discussion was a waste of time as well as there were no counter arguments and no statistical analysis done.

DoctorCaptain, yes. However, you need to define "decent". And you need to realize the limitations of resources. To me single payer is not that route.
1
DoctorCaptain, alive you say? That is very vague. What is someone has a condition where their brain is slipping out of their skull? A condition that literally exist, then what? Only a few doctors can actually treat that.
1
DoctorCaptain, it comes down to limited resources such as limited doctors, nurses, equipment, etc. We have a waiting list for organs. How do you make up for that? There is much more to it than just money.
1
You can't take money out of the equation, people do not work for free.
1
DoctorCaptain, that is the harsh reality. If the choice is money or people and you pick people doctors will go away.
1
We have more R&D which contributes to that added cost.
1
luvcheney1, I agree as well, it becomes worse when the consumer is not paying the bill. We have seen this with college loan programs where universities just raised prices because the federal government gives out high loans. What is making it worse is now everything it electronic so people are not seeing the exact price. Higher demand means higher prices.
1
litoo2002, there are other ways to "raise the price" and that is to lower the quality. You are saying that no provider can step out of the market which I will agree. But what will prevent them from just lowering the quality?
1
Chris Hakala, then they will not develop new products.
1
Chris Hakala, they are. You point to one vaccine when most new drugs are developed by private companies. As for universities and studies, funding from the government towards universities go towards other research besides science and drug research. In fact research in academics is very vague and many projects do not go anywhere. I do scientific research for a living, this is something I know a lot about.
1
litoo2002, the US is on par with those countries. Nothing suggests they do it better than the US. You look at rankings where those rankings are arbitrary. Anyone can go a legit analysis on the numbers and have the US be number one. Why don't they do it? Because people who actually understand what is going on do not want to spend the time doing it as they understand it is pointless. Those that do make those rankings simplify the issue a lot and are simply trying to sell you something.
1
"So, in your mind everything is arbitrary." These rankings are due to complexity of them. As I said anyone can make any ranking with legit statistical analysis and some can make the US to be number 1. " I can assure you, if it was possible to show in any scientific sense that the US is #1, corporations would fund that." Why? Leftists will just disagree simply because of where it comes from. Also, it isn't that simple. At that point you are wasting time. Intelligent people involved not trying to sell you something (so opposite of Bernie Sanders) realize how complex the issue is that you cannot reduce it down to a simple ranking.
1
dumbassmoron, Bernie claims he wants to raise taxes on his tax bracket, but he will add loopholes where him and his buddies do not have to.
1
Giving a tax break is giving money to people. Leftist's logic.

Ever thought you have been voting against your best interest?

Ever thought you lived in a bubble?

K F, this isn't a issue where you can just have one side discuss it. I criticize those that do that on the other side. This is an issue where both sides need to be present and give their counter views. Problem is that Bernie did that against Cruz and got destroyed which is why he has to hold town halls like this. When broken down single payer is not any better than what the US has. Bernie is all about discussing the issues, which is great. But when he does it like this it shows how anti-progressive he really is. Having a debate with counter viewpoints forces both sides to defend their positions with as much evidence as possible. You did not get that here.
1
K F, I agree that no network is going to go in depth on issue, and that includes TYT. They push for single payer and thus ignore the other side. You want to inform people you have to get experts on both sides to discuss the issue and defend their stance with evidence and statistical analysis. Just hearing one side praise something unchallenged is not a way to inform people. Why should I believe them? What are the opposing viewpoints? And yes, Cruz destroyed Bernie. The best was when Cruz brought up how much Bernie's plan would cost and how we could not pay for it by simply taxing the rich. Bernie did not deny it. Another great point was when the hair salon owner asked Bernie a question and Bernie showed he did not care to learn how a business operates. He does not care about other people at all.
1
K F, what is the other side? Do you know what it is? Also, what is the moderate viewpoint? You say "it was not needed as they addressed the same old arguments you and others make time and time again." What arguments do you think I make? What arguments do you think other experts will make? You say the town hall was to be informative when in my opinion is wasn't. It was one side of the argument that was not challenged, thus we cannot determine if what they said was true or not, or at the very least deceptive.
1
Denis, no country has free healthcare. It costs in either higher taxes, lower quality, or both.
1
Alexander, people like Slayer feel that the government is the only means of providing for people.
1
Denis, I have been paying taxes since I was 17 as well. What's your point? Defense spending is 3% of GDP, it is minute to the overall economy. Welfare programs cost way more.
1
K Coup, it is around 3%. Medicare and and medicaid is around 26% of the federal budget. The federal government spends round $1 trillion in healthcare already, more than it spends on defense. "So we spend almost as much on defense and veterans as we do on Social Security" You are switching from medicare and medicaid to now SS, what is your point? " But if you compare the US to the rest of the world in terms of social welfare spending we rank 21st in the world" Are you including state and local spending as well? Even at that, what's your point?
1
They also lack in R&D and have completely different cultures. They also have much smaller populations than us. How about you compare the US to countries of 100+ million.
1
Defense is 3% of GDP, healthcare is 1/6 of GDP. Basic math says no.
1
SainterSan, I am not comparing apples and oranges. Cutting defense spending down to $0 will not cover the cost of healthcare in the US.
1
SanterSan, you can compare the two. The OP is saying we can pay for healthcare simply by cutting defense spending. Defense spending is X amount and healthcare in the US is Y amount. Saying you can cut X to pay for Y does not make sense when X<Y. To give an example using different things. Say you had a cell phone plan that cost $100 a month and you live in an apartment that cost $600 a month. You want to upgrade to an apartment that will be $800 a month and your plan to pay for it would be to cut your cell phone bill. Even if you cut that bill to $0 you will still be short.
1
Healthcare is a complicated issue. Consider this, it is 1/6 of our GDP. To do medicare for all will require raising taxes on everyone and will be people losing their jobs. That radical of a change in the economy will lead to a major recession.
1
Leon Powe, there is a lot more to life expectancy than just healthcare. For example, if you remove car accidents and murders the US is number 1 in life expectancy. Does that mean the US is number 1? Or that the US has a better healthcare system? No. What it means is that these numbers people tie into healthcare are so close that any small changes in the variables leads to different results. Thus as a whole you cannot say which system is better. One could do a legit analysis making the US number 1 in healthcare. Point being these healthcare rankings are arbitrary and are, in my opinion, not worth much.
1
It is less expensive due to less R&D investment.
1
Our healthcare is on par with the rest of the world.
1
Lulu, why does healthcare insurance equal healthcare? Maybe we should start there.
