......At smaller schools you get teachers that want to teacher as opposed to ones that just want to do research and don't care about students except for their grad. students. More importantly though, college is a business. You are investing in something. In college the most important thing you gain is connections. You spend time outside of the classroom studying with people in you field, getting to know professors, doing an internship and developing contacts.......

The person who works 40 hours a day 51 weeks a year probably works a job that requires very little skill and is an expendable person. The person who work 3 hours a week for 30 weeks actually works more then you think. They are constantly trying to improve themselves and they involve a lot of money.

A college is a business and a place where you gain work experience. In college the most important things you gain are these. Contacts through internships, people in your field of study and professors, and the fact that you show businesses you are willing to jump through hoops to make yourself better. In college you are investing money to eventually gain more money. It is a business.

No, you are wrong. My contacts were asked about me. If that guy who got a BS in Computer Science came to a company with references from professors who most likely know people in that business, or a reference after working an internship in that business he will get the job. The high school graduate has to know someone. Businesses are taking a risk hiring people. They like to minimize that risk by hiring people with strong work experience and connection from strong references.

I do agree with what you said.

The problem with college is that people don't fully understand it. One, tuition is going up because of demand. More people rather pull out a loan to go to college then get a job and buy a house. So more demand means increase tuition. Next, there are a lot cheaper colleges out there. I paid less in my 5 years to earn my 2 degrees then a lot of people paid in one year of some colleges. Go to a smaller cheaper college, you actually get a better education.....

......That is how you get a job. A business isn't going to hire some stranger off the street unless they possess some unusual rare but very important skill. You need connections that will put in a good word for you so you can get a job. From there a business will know that with a college degree you will jump through hoops to move up. In all, it require work. The mentality to getting a college degree then a job is too much of the norm. You need to work for it.

The professor saids "Nerdly Smith was on time to class, dressed well, had a positive attitude, etc." and you could have worked with that professor. Professors do research. Also, you meet people in you field in college. How do you think you work in the field you study in? By meeting people in that field through college and learning what is out there.
