So let me get this straight. They are college educated but don't understand that you have to pay back a loan? What degree did they earn?

wafeman17 Doesn't matter. You pull out a loan you have to pay.

4Nicholas7 Which I don't agree with. Pull out a loan, buy a house, and see if the bank will pay it off after 25 years.

Tamara Davis Actually I added a lot to the conversation. Why do people get to have their loans paid for by the government? I have a STEM degree, a degree that is worth a lot and will earn a lot after my doctorate. Where is my loan forgiveness?

Damn, I am going to pull out a huge loan and just let society pay it off years later.

fakeaccount8888 I understood it all. I can just pussyfoot around and get my loan paid for. I find it funny how college educated individuals don't understand that you have to pay a loan off. Also, as usual, it will cost more than projected. Man the government is really great at predicting things.

Tamara Davis If they do certain work, for example teachers in at risk schools. This is a case of someone who simply could not get a job because they had a worthless degree.

Snapdragon 9600 That's taxes, that's money he earned. But I do agree we need to simplify the tax code.

4Nicholas7 Printing pennies is not a waste. We make up for it with the quarter.

Tewdy Quew I find it crazy how liberals continue to reward failure. Someone pulls out a big loan to get a philosophy degree and is able to get it paid back. Others manage their money to get an engineering degree and receive nothing. This is why people voted for republicans and Trump this time around. People are sick of democrats rewarding failure.

theguyshadows If you get a college degree you should be able to pay off a loan easily in 25 years. How about people earn a degree that is worth something.

Andrea Kae Why is college expensive to begin with? Because of the college loan program. Bernie Sanders said that in 1965 the average price for college was $243. What happened in 1965? That was when the federal government decided to start giving out loans for college. Bernie strategically picked that year for a reason (no different than when people 1968 for min. wage and inflation, it gives the highest value). With student loans that are so easy to obtain you increased the demand for college and thus they charge more, especially when supply is limited. We lack professors, TAs, tutors and other skilled workers. Thus, increase in demand with stagnate, at best, supply, means higher prices.

Andrea Kae To be honest there are a lot of worthless degrees. Business is not hard to study. Anyone can read a book and understand law. People need to go after the STEM fields. Now that does not mean only the STEM fields. If you go too deep in them you become socially inept. So there are advantages to working during college. Another problem the federal government has created is the whole 15 to finish crap. Forcing students to take 15 credits a semester so they can finish on time....whatever that means. I have students who are struggling with physics but have no time to study due to them working jobs and taking 4 other courses. They should be taking only 12 credits during that time when they are taking harder courses. That is how I done it. What you get are discouraged students who drop out or change majors thus now we have less workers in the STEM fields. The federal government is messing up education.

Andrea Kae My students are. I support pushing people to work hard, but not everyone can manage that much at a time. These students leave without really knowing the material if they even finish. Several of my students are looking at switching majors due to physics. They do well in other courses, just in physics they struggle. That is why they should take 12 credits, not 15.

theguyshadows The market.

theguyshadows STEM degrees earn a lot.
1
theguyshadows Not everyone will. But right now we are seriously lacking skilled workers in those fields.

Lack of supply. We lack professors, TAs, tutors and other skilled workers. People like me are not going to work for free.
