Typical Lib You need to understand about rights. How far are you willing to go on background checks. In the US you are innocent until proven guilty. With background checks you can deny people their second amendment right before they even commit a crime. That is what you can potentially do. The rights given to us by the founding fathers were put in place to give the US citizens power over the government. The idea was to control the government and if you look at them it didn't give the government to potentially have power over the people. Why would the government have to gain by allowing the population to own guns and have free speech as opposed to decided who gets to own a gun? You talk about nuclear warhead, well that isn't an arm. People also mention how in the 1700s they only had muzzle loaders. Well the founding fathers were very intelligent and probably knew technology would get better. We have the internet now so should we change free speech? No, if you also look at those rights they are very broad because they are designed to cover everyone and to never have an expiration date. That was how this country was set up, the federal government dealt with foreign affairs and protected the rights of US citizens they had to control the governments, meaning the states and local governments. It was a checks and balances of powers. We do have a violence problem in the US, and we should fix it. But the solution isn't taking away our rights. Our solution isn't making people guilty for not doing anything and our solution definitely isn't creating a government that can repress. I mean, I know you have no problem doing whatever the government tells you what to do but I rather have my rights to not be repressed.

This was dumb. I have been shooting guns since I was 6. I drew violent pictures as a kid and currently own violent and graphic movies (as in Ichi the Killer for example). I grew up around guns and I have autistic traits. I am OCD and socially awkward. According to Cenk I have all the signs of a potential mass shooter. At the same time I own 4 guns and have no intention in shooting anyone and always handle a gun like it is loaded. In the US you are innocent until proven guilty and we have rights for a reason. People like Cenk need to learn about the history of the US. I feel that Cenk is using his freedom of speech in a far more harmful way then others exercising their 2nd amendment right. At the same time I will never try to take away is 1st amendment right so he shouldn't take away people's 2nd.

slickleg64 The founding fathers were some of the smartest people to ever be on this earth. I am pretty sure they had a good idea that technology would get better throughout the years. The 2nd amendment is there to prevent tyranny. Look at the bill of rights. They are rights people have to control the government. Rights as in free speech, bear arms, denying the quartering of soldiers, etc. And none of those rights potentially gave power to the government over the people. The founding fathers wanted an arm society to be able to fight against an over powerful government like they did in the revolutionary war. And who are you to decide what is particle. The Va Tech shooter used two pistols, one had a 15 round magazine and the other had a 10 round one. He was able to kill 33 people that day. 15 rounds is a number some politicians want to limit it too. We do have a violence problem in the US but we don't take the simply route and remove our rights. We also don't make people guilty before they do anything because in the US we are innocent until proven guilty. We try to find a way to help fix the violence problem. Anyone who wants to take away our second amendment right just likes to live in a whole and doesn't care about working.

badger5079 No, I just say we don't make people guilty when they haven't done anything.

Typical Lib But how far are you willing to take it? A background check wouldn't have stopped this crime so what is the point of it? It is the slippery slope. We put in background checks and shootings still happen then more laws will be created.

MidBase1 I see it, that is why we have to keep our guns. Violence is a last resort and I don't see that time coming anytime soon. But as long as the fed continues to repress us there may be a time when future generations will have to revolt.

***** I agree, we do have some of our rights taken away. That is why we need to hold on to the most important right we have, the 2nd amendment. While I don't see us going to violence anytime soon I do see a time where future generations might have too. I really don't want to put the future in a position where they are so repressed they can't defend themselves.

***** Without us most of the free world will be in poor shape. In WWII we sat back for a little bit and the entire world went to war. Seems like the world can't really do well without us. They would like to think they can but they can't. And yes, the founding fathers didn't treat the blacks as best. But they set up a country where US citizens would have those rights. Later the US decided to treat blacks and Americans and humans and now they have rights. The basic idea of the design of the country was smart even though the creators were bigots. And at least one of the designers, Franklin, was an inventor. I am sure he saw a time where technology would get better.

MidBase1 The rest of the world also can do what they want. We are lucky enough to have a government that so far allows us to own guns. I am pretty sure I am more productive then you based on your understanding of rights.

***** The founding fathers were bigots in that they felt that white men were created equal, but as time passed we include minorities and women as well and they are equals now. The basic idea of the design of this country is legit as long as it includes everyone. I don't like having my rights taken away. Thing is that we do the best we can to avoid violence and find alternative methods in fixing a problem. But with the way things are going violence will be an option. I won't be soon and most likely not in my lifetime but future generations should have the chance to defend themselves if the time comes.

MidBase1 You just used common sense to justified a statistic you made up which shows you have no clue what you are talking about. That vast majority of people I know who own a gun hunt. Having the right to bear arms is to protect ourselves against tyranny. What will prevent a government from completing controlling us if we don't have guns? While we try to use any non-violent means necessary to change a situation and hopefully continue to do so it is a great safety net to have. I really don't need to own a gun but it is my right. Just like you don't need to express your free speech but it is your right.

So who in your mind is mentally stable? From what Cenk described sounds a lot like me. I drew pictures depicting violence. I have OCD, I have interest in violent crime and shootings and criminals. I also own violent movies and am socially awkward. I grew up around guns, I have handled guns since I am 6 and I own 4 guns right now. I have never pointed a gun at anyone and I am not going to shoot anyone. If you look at me and my background you will deem me mentally unstable when in reality a gun in my hand is incredibly safe. I always handle it like it is loaded. Many people you would deem mentally unstable when in reality they aren't. This is just one incident that Cenk is talking about. You can't take away people's rights and make people guilty when they haven't done anything to have their rights taken away.

danermanerkider Well my .30-06 is a family gun. It belong to my great-grandpa since WWI and will stay in the family. My .22 was a gift that I target shoot with. My shotgun is for in home protection along with my .38, which is also used for target shooting. Fact is that with the amount of guns we have in this country and gun owners chances are really low that my guns will ever hurt anyone. I grew up in a very gun friendly area where kids had guns in their car during high school. They would hunt in the morning and then show up to schools. When you are around them constantly it is no big deal. They problem with "common sense" is that I is subjective. It is used by people to give them the feeling that what they say is the way it is and they know what best. In reality "common sense" should never be used in any debate or discussion because nothing is common sense. They problem with gun control is that how far are you willing to go? We have the 2nd amendment for a reason and it is to prevent tyranny. We were lucky enough to have a federal government designed that gave us rights that they couldn't use to control us. You have too look at the people making the laws. The 2nd amendment is one of those rights that give people power over the government and not the other way around. By creating gun control laws you open the doorway for current and future politicians to have power over the people. This is a complex issue.
