Not really apples and oranges. Arne Duncan sent his kids to private schools, but that was never brought up. The fact that she has not attended public schools nor does not have any children does not mean anything. You are basically saying the gas station attendant I just talked to a few minutes ago is more qualified than her just because she attended public schools and so did her children.

Graduation rates is a poor indicator. My state increased their graduation rate by lowering the standard.

With standards teachers are forced to teach to them and essentially teach to the test. It begs the question on what should be taught in public schools? To me it should be about promoting creativity and working with others until 8th grade establishing more fun activities. In high school students can branch off into different fields. The advanced ones to the advanced course. The "slower" students can learn remedial skills and take electives they enjoy and after that they are adults. Instead there is pressure on schools with federal standards to teach to the test and regress to the norm. They can't be creative. I am not saying my idea is best, but we can't consider new ideas if we keep teaching to tests.

I just got checked for STDs, I do it every six months because it is easy and the right thing to do. The person drawing my blood and the person analyzing it never had HIV in their lives. So I should no longer trust my tests results?

"Betsy DeVos doesn't know anything about Public schools or the issues she will be facing" How so? Do you really know what she will be facing? Most likely financing issues. States run K-12 education, not the federal government. The most common degree for CEOs is engineering, not anything business related.

I don't mind because in the end all she is going to be is a warm body in a position that should not even exist. She is not going to do anything. The federal government should not be involved in education. This is what will happen in the end. So who cares? The states run most of education to begin with. I support this nomination in this case.

Trebor, you clearly don't understand public education. K-12 public education is ran and mainly funded at the state and local level. This is a position, an unelectable position mind you, that did not exist until 1979. The federal government has little involvement in public education besides giving extra money to Title I schools (which is minute and creates a bureaucratic mess) and creating federal standards such as Goals 2000, NCLB, and now CCSS. I work in public education and all the department of ed did was create unnecessary waste and bureaucracy. What Trump is doing is putting someone in this position to fill a position to be simply a warm body. That's it and that is all I care about. The takes the federal government out of public education like it was before 1979.

These federal agencies like the Department of Ed was nothing more than a jobs program created by the government. Trump is going to end that and should. Before 1979 we still had public schools.

I bet every democrat support has no job at all. I can make stereotypes as well!

K-12 education is mainly funded at the state and local level and is ran by the states. DeVos has very little power if she has any at all. DeVos will be nothing more than a warm body in a position that has to be filled and the states will just pick up the little extra slack in the end. This is not a big deal.

macrixen, most federal funding go to Title I schools. As a result those schools typically receive the most money but still perform poorly. As a whole, though, federal funding is minute an funding for education is mainly from the state and local level. With that states may have to pick up the tab, but Trump is cutting taxes across the board which means more revenue at the local level. Also, if housing improves and businesses come back that will be more property taxes thus funding will be fine. The biggest change will be doing away with federal standards which to be honest is something we have to do.

Julie, do you have an actual rebuttal?

Bradley, liberals hate local control because they hate competition and love being lazy. They also are a bit fascist at times. To them local control means that they will have to do actual work to ensure that education if funded and runs well in their local community, or they feel that way. And they don't like to work. They are also scared of another state doing better than them so they want everyone to regressive to the norm set by the federal government. They will not admit it but that is what they subconsciously support.

Stone, do you want students who test well or who are productive? The US is in the top 5 in productivity. Also, most of those countries have small populations as in smaller than most of our states. Sir Ken Robinson said you can't compare Finland to the US as it is an unfair comparison. Those countries have different culture and societies. S. Korea for example has over 80% of their parents paying to send their kids to private after school programs to study. Talking to a guy from S. Korea he said their schools are not much better than the US so people go private after school. S. Korea also has a high suicide rate though. But to say they are doing better because of a centralized system is ignoring so many variables.

Why do you think she is a moron?
1
Not really.

The reality is that the federal government has very little influence on education in the US. K-12 education is ran and funded m at the state and local level. DeVos will have very little power and that scares power hungry democrats.
