It is one thing to challenge a viewpoint. It is another when it plays a role in their grade. I feel several professors are too liberal and when I challenged them earned a lower grade. I still graduated and now I am earning a PhD in physical chemistry. The professors who I challenged were in the English department, so go figure.

***** In some ways yes. They need to teach kids how to think critically and develop sound arguments. You can take a political stance but you have to be able to defend it. That is what professors should be teaching.

I am pursuing my PhD in physical chemistry. As a result I hate liberals. Several of my friends are like that. Maybe because we are earning a PhD in a field that requires actual thought.

In reality it depends on the fields. In the STEM fields and economics they tend to be moderate. In fields such as English, gender studies, arts etc. they tend to be liberal.

Education should be about looking at something through an objective lens and thinking critically. I support calling out professors who don't promote that.

True. At my university we have had several democrat and liberal speakers during the election time. No one from the right was allowed to speak.

Joel Savoie True. Being "educated" does not necessarily mean being able to think critically.

jacqueline716 I agree. That is why those who study STEM fields tend to be moderate or more conservative.

Oliver Eddy http://www.criticalreview.com/2004/pdfs/cardiff_klein.pdf They are still leaning democrat, but not as much compared to humanities and arts. Look at engineering.

Oliver Eddy I have read the data. Yes, as a whole almost every department leans left. But when you start getting to departments that require more critical thinking such as the STEM fields, especially engineering, they don't as much.
1
Oliver Eddy It is leaning left. At universities, just by what they have become, will lean left. When you receive tenure you are done as a professor. You don't have to produce. In the private sector you have to produce. Being in a setting where you don't have to produce or compete, and you are around people who think like you on a constant basis will get you to lean left. You end up in a bubble. That is just the nature of it. No different than how those who are young and poor vote democrats, lack of experience outside their bubble.

Cash, a proper education is looking at something through an objective lens an thinking critically. You learn facts in basic, 100 level courses. As you advance you start to think critically. Problem is professors don't like that. I had a professor who made me read Shock Doctrine my Naomi Klein. I ripped on the book on how it was poorly written and appealed to emotions. I did not go against the facts, I went against how they were presented. To young minds that is dangerous to do. I am intelligent enough to see through BS. This is a common problem in college and needs to be addressed.

There is a point here. You get into the fields that require critical thinking, such as the STEM fields and economics, you will see those professors are not as liberal as say ones in arts and humanities. Being a professor is not much work if you think about it. To get tenure you just have to be buddies with other tenured professors. With universities you have a group of "intellectuals" that are very unproductive. It is really sad.

It comes down to how to formulate an argument. I brought up the issue of the cake shop being closed down due to the gay couple not getting what they want. My argument was that gay couple, who felt like they are being oppressed, have no become the oppressor. I even cited a piece of literature given by that professor on it. I wasn't taking a stance at the time, I simply said that the gay couple are now the oppressors. The professor stopped the debate the second I cited sources he gave me. Figures.
