The federal government has enacted regulations and taxes which causes prices increases. On education, the federal loan program increased demand for college without increasing supply causing the price to go up. Even at that the textbook price was covered. It is a one time sell for them. In the 50s every other country was rebuilding which is why the US made all the products. We has a competitive edge. After the war every other country was destroyed.
