A word is only offensive if you make it. The first head coach there was native American and so were 3 of the players. Yes, they are talking about Indians when it comes to redskins but the word isn't offensive except for the select few. You can make any word offensive. A vast majority don't view it as offensive and we don't go around calling Indians redskins.

But people don't choose to be attacked by pirates or sharks. Having those names condone pirate and shark attacks. Having the name Angels is pushing religion on atheist and considering how most ballparks are funded by tax dollars that is against separation of church and state.
1
And the first head coach of the Redskins was Native American, but that doesn't matter to anyone apparently. So just because the Cleveland Browns first head coach was Paul Brown that doesn't mean anything to me. I find the name racist and offensive. It signifies the color brown to dogs meaning all brown people are dogs.
1
As I said before, the original redskins coach was a native American and so were 3 players. With having the name labeled to a football team makes the name not a slur since most people recognized the name as a football team, not Indians. And a very small minority of natives feel it is a slur. This will be proven when Snyder brings that to court.

Also, you can find a lot of names offensive. The fighting irish. Pirates, Buccaneers, or the Browns. Where did the name Browns come from? I can view it as a way to targeting minorities and with a dog as a mascot it makes they out to be like dogs. What about the Angels? An atheist one day might find that offensive. This is the thing that will happen if we changed the redskins name.
1
Because it isn't a slur. If you say that is a slur I can say the fighting irish is a slur or the name pirates is offensive in that it promotes pirate attacks. I can say that every indian name is a slur in it makes Indians look aggressive. Never mind the Seminole tribe supports that name. Nobody uses redskins anymore as a racial slur. Really, calling a team makes the name not a slur in that I envision redskins as a football team.

I am offended by the Pittsburg Pirates. We have pirate attacks all the time and we need to think about the families of those people. We are supporting pirate attacks with that name.

The original head coach of the Redskins was a native American and there were three players on the team that were.
1
So now you are saying irish people are mythical beings? I get it. See how easy this can be spin.
1
Redskins is offensive to a very small group of people. With that it isn't a racist slur. If you are going to change that name just because a few group of people are offended then you have to change a lot of names.
1
Notre Dame should change their name. It makes Irish look like aggressive drunks.
1
I looked up the name on wiki and after that it just solidifies my thought on the name not being racist or a slur. When I think if redskins I think of a football team and the Washington Redskins can be thanked for that.
1
I find the name pirates and buccaneers offense because it condones pirate attacks which still happen today. My point is that you can take almost any name and find it offensive.
1
It still makes Indians look like an aggressive group of people. Someone can be offended by it.
1
The first head coach of the Redskins was a native American along with 3 of the players. Just because Notre Dame students are stereotypes doesn't mean the team has to keep the name.
1
It hasn't come that far. Snyder will bring up native americans who simply don't find the name offensive which is a vast majority of the native americans. He will bring up how the first head coach was a native American. He has a ton of resources to show how that the people who want the name change or find this name offensive are just plain stupid. The name isn't changing.
1
The word may have been offensive in the beginning but it isn't now. Also it can be viewed in how you use the word in it being offensive or not. Here redskins is simply the name of a football team. The word was derived as a way to recognize Indians but it isn't used in a offensive manner. In all the name isn't going to change because the vast majority, including native americans don't view it as offensive. The name is here to stay.
1
No one is complaining about the logo, they are complaining about the name. So now you are saying Irish people are a bunch of leprechauns that like to fight. Maybe if I catch an irish person I can get their gold.
1
And if it does change for some odd reason I want all pirate names change since I feel it condones pirate attacks. I want the Angels change since it has to be offensive to atheists. I want the sharks name change since it condones shark attacks. That has to be done since I feel it is a basic human act of respect and courtesy.
