  2. Federal government spending as a percent of GDP has been increasing for decades from around 14% after WWII to around 20% now. State and local spending has been increasing as well in terms of percent of GDP. The government has been steadily growing for decades. This past election came down to we can either go left and continue that trend or go right and cut back. You had both Trump and Bernie (who endorsed Clinton and many people locally, so we can count him) ran a campaign on the idea that the people are struggling and suffering while the rich are getting richer. Bernie wanted more government, Trump wanted less. Trump, though correctly pointed out that the politicians are the ones getting richer through all of this, including Bernie who made millions off of his book sales and recently bought a third home. People went right and went to reducing the government. Ultra liberals complain about rich people and want more government when more government is the one causing the rich to get richer.
