  6. David Stewart, that is highly deceptive. Winning the votes of those with a liberal arts degree is not winning the votes of those who are educated. I am a PhD candidate myself in physical chemistry and the democrats, to me, are very ignorant.

  7. Isaac, what you said is true. Most people are moderates. Also, another flaw with those polls is that they don't separate between academics and industry. Around 30% of CEOs have an engineering degree, do you think they are voting democrat or republican? But as a whole scientists care about science, and those with PhDs only care about their one topic, typically. Thus they are ignorant when it comes to other issues such as the economy. So as a whole what David is saying is pretty much wrong.

  8. David Stewart, ever heard of the saying "those that can't do teach"? How many of those scientists with PhDs are professors that could not get a job in industry because they can't do? Also, as I said, do they necessarily have knowledge in other fields such as economics? People with PhDs usually devote their life to one field making them ignorant in others.

A problem with those with PhD is that they become myopic and only care about their fields and become ignorant elsewhere. I work with PhD candidates and professors on a daily basis and it annoys me how they fail to look at issues through an objective lens. As far as your poll is concerned, one, the polls have been wrong lately. Next, under Bush funding for science went up. As Neil deGrasse Tyson puts it, no republican wants to die poor thus they increase funding for science historically. When I first enter grad school a group of physics PhD candidates brought that up. So even if the majority of scientists are dems they are not voting for more funding. Do some research.

  12. David Stewart, the far left has become ridiculous. Take any domestic policies, especially in economics, and when you break it down from the view point of both sides you see that the right will come to a conclusion that while we can improve on what we have, we are still doing strong. But the left comes out like the country is going to burn down and we need more government to save us. Pick any topic and I bet I can get you to go to the extreme on the issues and I will come out as a moderate.

  15. David Stewart, it is much more complicated than that. One can argue the government is involved enough. Also, you have to ask, how can it become involved? And what level as we have state and local governments as well. Right now the left, especially TYT and their supporters want the federal government to push for a lot of economic reform, and it is seen with their support of Bernie who was as radical as it got. That is not center left, that is extreme left.

If you look at the US our problems stem from the federal government being involved because we have become too far left in our government. That is the reason why Trump and the republicans won, we have to shift our country back to the center.

Just because scientists vote for them does not change that fact. The reality is that many do not follow politics. When I discuss politics with my colleagues (remember, I study science for a living) I can name off politicians and parts of the constitution they can't. They only know what the media feeds them which the media is left as well, for the most part. So they go off of the propaganda that Trump was an idiot and a racist, or that republicans are anti-science, all of which is not true. To me, the democratic party feeds off of those who are myopic and emotional. With professors as in scientists, you have a career where you interact with only other scientists, you teach what you know young, impressionable minds, and you play politics to get tenure where then it is almost impossible for you to lose a job. It is no secret why they vote democrat at that point. As I said, you have to compare scientists in industry to scientists in academics. Even at that, when you look at academics those in the STEM fields are less liberal than those in the liberal arts. So as a whole, the idea that "educated" people vote democrats and "uneducated" vote republican is simply not true. Those with a higher income typically vote republican and there is a correlation between intelligence and income.

" And scientists are more likely to believe that the government should take care of those who can’t take care of themselves" How many of them understand economics? Asking those questions to scientists is similar to asking a car mechanic to fix your computer. Those questions are areas outside of their field of expertise as I mentioned before, they focus mainly on science and are ignorant on other topics.
