If you lower the min. wage prices will go down giving more purchasing power to the poor. Individuals have the ability to develop small businesses. Also, as a whole if you are struggling working at walmart then you have to develop a better skill to improve your situation.

A CEO gets bonuses because a business pays him well to attract him to begin with. If he is high in demand he will get paid a lot. Similar to a coach who gets paid a lot for a team. If he sucks he still gets paid well because originally he was highly demand. Afterwards he will have a hard time getting a job.

Where is the money going to come from?
1
Halfway through I see these two are idiots. Worker productivity is up due to technology. People are actually making more for less work now if you look at unit labor cost. That business will hire less during the summer and still get work done, he will just make people work harder since they are getting paid more. San. Fran. pays more because cost of living is high there. With businesses the money has to come from somewhere. Businesses don't pay more because the simply can't afford too.
1
Every argument these two idiots made can easily be debunked by me. Put me on this show and they will be embarrassed.
1
Yeah, but if you run a business and you can't afford to pay more then you simply can't. You can pay all your workers $20/hr if you run a burger joint and you will see maximum production but you won't be making a profit since you will be giving out more money than you make.
1
Slaves were forced to work. People have a choice to work at certain places. If you want to work someplace else and earn more then you need to develop a skill and do it. Big businesses pay what they can afford. If someone doesn't want to work for that business then they can work someplace else.
1
Every argument these two make about raising the min. wage has been debunked. These two should get someone who knows what they are talking about on their show to prove them wrong. Oh, wait, they did that in the past when they had Peter Schiff. Cenk just cut him off.
1
So what is your solution? That small business owner trying to work and live his dream should instead work at Costco now? I think if you are so crap that you can't find a way to live off of the min. wage then you don't deserve to survive. 89% of people making $9.50/hr or less are above the poverty line, it can be done.

Construction workers make a lot.
1
Shhhhh.....that is a secret. Don't tell anyone.
1
Fast food joints will just cut employment and give out less products which is basically raising prices. People talk about the benefits of raising the min. wage but the fact is the money has to come from somewhere. If a business can't afford higher wages then they have to adjust to be able too and that means cutting hours, jobs and wages of more experienced staff.
1
Yes, because it is every business goal to destroy the economy. The simple fact is that businesses can afford higher wages.
1
Inflation doesn't happen every single year. My rent, milk, gas, eggs, etc. all cost roughly the same as they had for the best decade. In that past decade I have gotten raises thus my lifestyle is better.
1
They can't answer that. I asked that before and I have yet to receive a good answer.
1
How? That person making that low amount is most likely working part time with very flexible hours or is an unskilled worker like a high school kid. That is a supplemental form of income and that is great for the economy. They are doing necessary jobs but are jobs that pay a low wage. The people doing them are not dependent on those jobs. When I worked my first job I made the min. wage but I was 17 and was living with my parents.
1
His point was that everyone claims if you remove the min. wage then employers will pay nothing. Well, that doesn't happen. Employers would love to pay more but simply can't afford to.
1
Uh, no. 95% of parents who earn less than $10,000/yr have a spouse that makes at least $20,000/yr. Almost half of those parents have a spouse that makes at least $50,000/yr. Low wage workers are second earners of a household. They are not the main earners. Low wage jobs are suppose to be part time flexible hour jobs or jobs for unskilled workers, they are not meant to be lived off of. And you can't determine a living wage due to the factors involved. The term doesn't exist.
1
And why does that person make so much? Because they have a skill and take on responsibilities that allows them to make that much. If a walmart employee messes up a shelf won't get stocked right. If a walmart manager messes up a particular shift and area is unproductive. If the CEO messes up the entire company goes under. You see the level of responsibility contributing to pay.
1
Besides that only around 5% of workers make the min. wage, the rest make more. The average wage is over $23/hr. A vast majority of min. wage earners are not poor. And, more importantly, businesses simply can't afford to pay higher wages.
1
89% of individuals who earn $9.50/hr or less are above the poverty level. A small minority of those people exist.
1
Employers pay their best workers well. We see that in only around 5% of workers make the min. wage and the average hourly pay is around $23/hr. If you force employers to pay low wage workers more they will not hire part time work or unskilled workers. That is less jobs and money for people. If you are a single parent then quite simply you need to find a way to earn more. Just because they messed up doesn't mean the economy and society have to suffer.
1
All facts that are wrong. I can easily debunk everything they said.
1
What did I misquote? Fact is the Walmart simply can't afford higher wages and if you are trying to make a living off of a job at Walmart you have problems.
1
No, I am using research that showed that low wage workers are a supplemental form of income of a household. They are not the primary earners. A min. wage worker working part time could be making only $8000/yr. But if they live with a parent or a spouse (which statistically happens) that makes $40,000/yr then that household make $48,000/yr. It isn't 3 full time min. wage workers but one primary earner plus a low wage workers.
1
Define a living wage. You do know that the average household income of individuals who make $9.50/hr or less is over $47,000/yr.
1
After paying stockholders and investing in new walmarts, advertising, etc. then they really don't have that much to pay more. They would love to pay more since they are constantly criticized for "low wages" (when they pay on average over $11/hr) but they simply can't.
1
Depends on where you live and how you live. I make $8.25/hr. That is a living wage to me because that is a part time job to me. My full time earns me over $14/hr. The average household income of people making $9.50/hr or less is over $47,000/yr. Min. wage workers are not poor and are making a living.
1
And we should help that 10%. We don't help them buy making it harder for businesses to hire more people. We lower regulations and taxes and give purchasing power back to the consumer and businesses so workers can get hired, develop skills, and sell their skills in the competitive market.
