Two problems here. One, background checks already exist, and the NRA pushed for it in the past. Next, you cannot regulate private sales without a gun registry. If I were to sell my gun to my friend how do you track it? The gun show loophole is a myth as most dealers are licensed. This poll is pointless as background checks exist already and you cannot regulate private sales without invasion of privacy.

The gun show loophole involves gun shows. Craigslist is not a gun show. With Craigslist sales can only occur within state lines, so it isn't that easy.

Freelance, how many gun owners are going to register their guns? Also, it isn't that easy to register guns. A car has a VIN number located in several parts of the car. You don't have that with a gun. And a bullet coming out of a gun is hard to trace.

scott b, go to a gun show and buy a gun, you will see what I mean. If you found that one person at a gun show who was not a license dealer then congrats, you found something rare. Most sales are by license dealers. Please do your research and learn a little about guns and the laws.

scott b, you are lying then or you simply know the rare gun shows to go to. Most gun shows require sellers to be licensed dealers, it really varies by states. The "gun show loophole" talking point is just that, a talking point. Your anecdotal situation does not represent the norm. You call me flat out wrong but I will ask you, how many gun shows have you been to outside of TX? How many guns have you really bought? What kind were they? Where were they? Were they in rural areas or in cities? There are many factors that play in this. TX is a gun friendly state, so it would not surprise me if you happen to find gun shows without licensed dealers. Now try other states.

scott b., it is called a myth because it is not a major issue. The left is saying that criminals are getting guns at will at these gun shows when they aren't. Also, establishing such rules on gun shows is very challenging as it really is dependent on the state. Any federal law starts getting into the issue of state rights. For example, online sales are not restricted to federal mandate unless it is done across state lines in which commerce occurs. There is a lot to this issue. I have studied gun laws and know the arguments of them.

rouge1ful, background checks are done at the federal level if it is a licensed dealer. Also, we don't even have mass shootings everyday.

I bought all of my guns without a background check. Well, two were given to me and two I bought. I bought from private sellers. None of them are registered so I can sell them tomorrow and it would be like I never had them. That is why you can never do background checks on all gun sales.

scott b, it is not a major issue. Is it a topic of debate? Yes. But it is not a major issue, that is the point. Criminals are not getting their guns at gun shows. If they are it is very rare. Do you make drastic changes because of that? No. The left runs around crying about the gun show loophole as if it is a major problem. Look at the recent mass shootings. Tell me how many of them bought guns at a gun show?

scott b, I am all for having a discussion on the issue, but people need to be pulled to the middle. Realize the truth that the vast majority of criminal do not get their guns at gun shows. A very small portion do. The majority of guns used in crimes were either obtained legally or through friends, family or street sales. These are facts you need to realize. That is why it is called a myth. Requiring all gun sales at gun shows to be subjected to a background check (when over 90% of them already are) would not even put a dent in solving the gun issue.
