Factory and warehouse jobs pay very well because they require a skill. That is why the average wage is over $23/hr. Fast food jobs or retail jobs are low skill jobs and thus are low paid. They are great starter jobs. Removing the min. wage will lower unemployment and give low skill individuals the chance to work and move up. It would also allow for those companies to pay more veteran staff more since they will be paying new workers a lower wage.
1
Because they are investors. You don't get rich by sitting on your money but investing. For every dollar that the investor earns the general public earns $5. If you take money away from the investors that is less money for them to invest just less economic growth, less jobs and less production. Taxes are actually too high.
1
And what about their stockholders or investment in other aspects of business? A business pays more then just its workers. Plus, we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world and our regulations are going up. The bigger problem in all of this is why are people trying to work here for a living? These jobs require no skills at all.
1
Regulations hinders competition. Big businesses have the resources to overcome more regulations where small ones don't thus big businesses have the advantage.
1
Because they can pay an employee who is 15 just entering the work force $2/hr and that employee who works fulltime and has been for over a decade can get paid more.
1
The BLS has a breakdown of what each industry makes on average. The two lowest were leisure which as around $13hr and retail around $16/hr. Manufacturing was over $24/hr.
1
There are opportunities out there, people just need to find them and work for them. As long as we keep giving away money we remove the incentive to work and hurt the economy.
1
......invest either to myself or to our business. The only time government invests money is in education and that gives out a small return. When the government takes money in taxes and gives it away in the form of welfare that hurts the economy in that it hurts the dollar because you are giving money to people for doing nothing.
1
Business have to sell an affordable reliable product and keep employees happy. You keep employees happy by not overworking them. Businesses will hire more and pay more if they can afford it. If they can't they will simply not hire. Imagine how great it would be for a business to hire multiple part time and young workers to do little jobs and allow more veteran staff to do more and get paid more. That is what will happen with no min. wage.
1
A $3 wage is great for someone of no work experience or a part time job. In the former case that is job training and the latter that is supplemental income. The average wage is over $23/hr so people will still be earning a lot. The spending power of the worker will go up do to decrease in price and demand will go up. Jobs will be created and the economy will prosper.
1
The loopholes for individuals are so they can invest as well. You get a tax break if you go to college. As a whole I don't agree with federal income tax, we should go back to a tax on the states based on population it is up to the states to determine how to raise the money but that is what we have right now. And the first 5 years of college I was working on two degrees and research project. I enter the PhD program for physics for 2 year but now switched to education and only have 2 years left.
1
Taxes are at an all time high. The rich year after year are paying more and more taxes. A strong economy does mean workers are getting paid a fair wage and a fair wage is determine by the cost of goods and service. If you force businesses to pay more in taxes or regulations they will increase prices and cut wages because they simply can't afford more. Businesses would love to pay more and that is seen through them paying more then the min. wage, but they can't pay more if they can't afford to.
1
Employees don't become investors. They will just spend it on another T-shirt or just that much more food. They won't go out and buy a business and create jobs. And yes, production has gone up because of technology, not because workers are working more.
1
And here is the point, I have research experience, I have work experience in other parts of the private sector and with my knowledge I will have no problem getting a job. So a threat of my job losing pay isn't that big of a deal to me.
1
My part time job pays a low wage but I am able to live. The reason is because my full time job pays a decent wage and the part time is extra income. A business pays part time workers less because they are a greater risk. Part time workers are not as dedicated thus they are not paid as much. And not everyone has two jobs, I want a society where you don't need 2 jobs but some will need 2 jobs until they establish themselves.
1
Rich people pay over 50% of the taxes already.
1
Simple google search pointed me to a CNN page which showed that the top 10% paid over 70% of federal taxes. We can break it down more but overall the rich do pay the majority of taxes.
1
Companies and business owners want a strong economy because it behooves them. When you create high taxes you force the rich to move their money overseas to avoid it. With higher taxes you take money away from the investors and thus the middle class suffers.
1
If taxes and regulations weren't so high then those businesses can pay a higher wage. I think a bigger problem is why are people trying to make a living off of a job a high school dropout can do?
1
Fast food workers around the world are paid low as well. And I do support the rich. I support the country being rich with low unemployment and people not living off of the government.
1
The rich pay over 50% of the taxes in the US. We have loopholes for corporate taxes because we have to attract businesses since we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. You don't need a degree to do well. You develop a skill or shoot for a goal and earn more money. Yes, I make $15/hr but I am a year away from earning more and having job security. I have a hobby where I am investing time and money in where when I move up I can earn an extra $20,000/yr on top of my career.
1
I have been to college and yes, some jobs require schooling but others don't Working at a factory which on average pays over $20/hr requires no schooling. Being a truck driver requires little schooling. Construction requires little schooling. Being a small business owner requires no schooling. There are jobs out there for people who don't go to college.
1
Yep that is why every business pays every employee the min. wage.....oh, wait......
1
You are telling potential workers they can't get a job because they are not worth the min. wage. If you are only worth $5/hr you can't get a job now.
1
If you forced that so call law then the highest paid employee will get money elsewhere. Also, it will ruin the economy. Those high paid employees are a great investment in that they know how to invest money to grow capital and thus grow the economy. The low wage employees don't or haven't proven themselves yet. Bringing people down isn't going to help the economy, we have to bring the low wage worker up.
1
Those are companies, I am talking about individuals the rich as a whole compared to the rest of the country.
1
With no minimum wage unemployment will drop and production will sour leading to stronger consumer power and a better economy. With a lower min. wage prices will be cheaper and since the average wage is already over $23/hr the consumer purchasing power will go up. Demand will go up thus those fast food restaurants will hire more. Also employers can hire at a low wage to do on the job training and when they are trained they can pay them more.
1
A company can pay part time employees and low skill workers less and pay their more veteran staff more. Why does a high school student with no job experience need a high wage? Or a part time employee? They are high risk investment in that they are not as dedicated to the job. A full time employee at job A who works part time at job B can use the two jobs to compete. If job B loves the employee they can attract him to full time but paying him more then job A. He is selling his skills.
1
I work very hard, that is how I have time and money. I put myself in a position to where I can work in my career and my hobby which does make me a decent amount of money. That is what you have to do.
1
Those CEOs will work elsewhere if you cut their income. Plus, those CEOs invest money to improve the companies and are in charged of a lot thus they are paid more. Those low wage workers are easily replaceable and invest very little. The rich do sacrifice a lot. You don't get rich just sitting on money, you get rich investing it. Taking money away from the investors does more harm then good to the economy.
1
Taxes are too high. Taking money away from the rich removes the incentive to invest and do well and hurts the economy. I support cutting the size of the federal government. Doing so will reduce expenses and you can still have all you fancy government programs. Raising taxes hurts the economy. You take money out of the hand of investors and competitors and place it in the hands of politicians.
1
Those millions of americans who are working starter jobs need to find a way to move up. One way is allowing them to get paid a low wage to work part time at another job to compete. And that part time job can help them develop a skill to move up or send their children or family members to college. You don't need to go to college to be successful also. Fact is that if you are getting paid a low wage you better find a way to sell yourself for more money.
1
With a min. wage you do two things, one is raise prices. Another is discriminate against a set of workers with no skills thus hindering them from ever getting a job and improving themselves and their family. Both hurt the economy. Low wage jobs will continue to exist but those jobs are made to be starter jobs or part time jobs. If you raise the min. wage you remove that.
1
If that was the case then I would take my skill and sell it elsewhere. I have that ability now. And I admit, I have been fortunate but I was fortunate because my parents were able to work hard themselves, get jobs and raise me to be productive myself. When you put policies in place like raise taxes or the min. wage you hinder families and individuals from getting jobs and lower their purchasing power with higher prices and prevents them from progressing and making their kid's life better.
1
Did you just compare In and Out to McD's? They are two totally different companies. McD's has a value menu and a wider variety along with it being open 24 hours and provide fast food. In and Out has a very limited menu that takes longer to make with no value menu. Two completely different businesses.
1
Nobody paid that tax rate you referenced. That has been proven many times. Businesses would love to pay their workers more because in a competitive market you attract the best workers that way. The fact is that they simply can't pay more. If businesses were so set on pay dirt then the local warehouse in my town wouldn't pay employees $12/hr starting but instead $7.25/hr. They pay more because they can afford to, they also give out benefits.
1
Actually that is good to have that many immigrants, as long as they are legal, making that much money. It will help them improve their lives thus the lives of future generations. It also keeps prices low thus consumers have more purchasing powers. Business will pay a decent wage, the average wage in the US is over $23/hr and place like walmart pay on average $11/hr. What you just mentioned doesn't create a larger poverty class but increases production and a strong economy.
1
Exactly, supply and demand. The supply of those workers is high so he price of the is low.
1
No, land lords will just increase the price of rent due to higher demand. Thank you in raising my rent.
1
When the min. wage was $5.15/hr major restaurants like McD's and Subway was starting their employees at $6.50 in my hometown.
1
Rent in my area is around $500/month for a 1 bedroom. If the government were to give everyone $1000/month then rent will go up because now $1000/month isn't worth much since everyone has it. That is how taxes and giving away money hurts the economy.
1
The biggest issue on this video is why are people trying to make a living working a job a high school dropout can do? Maybe instead of forcing companies to pay more we develop an atmosphere where there are higher paying jobs available.
1
You don't need money or schooling to gain skills. Really, going to college doesn't guarantee you skills. With no min. wage jobs can hire at a low wage and do on the job training. Once you develop a skill you can get paid more.
1
I promise you can't replace my job because you don't have the skills I have. I studied and refined my knowledge and skill for over 8 years and continue to do so to give me job security. If you develop a skill without college then great, I know many that have and do well. They have a different skill set then I do. I developed my skill through studying and doing research for years to where I am highly employable.
1
The rich pay for over 50% of the taxes already. You are right, there are jobs that need to be done but they are low wage jobs because anyone can do it. I made $8/hr to flip burgers. I now make $15/hr to use my knowledge and skill I developed over the past 8 years in college to teach and develop kids and to enforce rules. If you want to get paid more then develop a skill and get paid more. Sorry that the just a high school dropout can do doesn't pay well.
1
The top 5% pay over 50% of taxes.
1
Probably. That cheaper CEO is cheaper because they are not as experienced or not as good. That first CEO leaves the company, goes to a rival one and succeeds. That is how it works. If you feel the need to be gracious then become a CEO and work for nothing.
1
If large corporations only wanted to pay the bare minimum the average wage in the US would not be $23/hr. All corporations pay over the min. wage unless it is a new employee. Between 5-6% of wage earners earn at or below the min. wage.
1
Those companies simply can't afford to pay a higher wage. They have to pay stock holders on top of those workers. Also, if taxes and regulations weren't so high then they could pay a higher wage. This whole idea that these big companies can afford a higher wage right now isn't true.
1
You are missing the point. There idea of helping others is bringing people down. I went to school for years and I have a very advanced skill but yet people like Cenk feel like I deserve the same amount as a fry cook. They don't say it that way they say it as in the fry cook should get paid more but never say an individual with an science degree or an engineering degree should get paid more as well.
1
It isn't a sample of the land lord's greed, it is the fact that now more people have money to afford rent thus demand goes up. More people will be looking for one bedrooms where they won't have enough so they will raise rent. And a $22/hr wage will kill so many jobs and raise prices like crazy. Production is up because of technology, not because of working harder. You expect high schoolers to get paid the same as factory maintenance workers.
1
I am advocating giving people the ability to move up. When you create a min. wage you tell businesses to discriminate against low skill workers since they are not worth that much. You hinder someone from getting a job and making their situation better by developing skills and bring in competitors to compete for their skill. Yes, there are families who are in low income brackets but you are not allowing them to move up and improve their situation and more importantly their children's situation.
1
Yeah, companies pay nothing when the average wage is over $23/hr. Walmart's average wage is over $11/hr. All the min. wage does is force companies to discriminate against low skill workers. They are not worth the set min. wage so they don't hire them.
1
And you know nothing about running a business or the economy. Those big businesses need to pay share holders as well as workers. You want to punish adults who worked hard and invested time and money to be successful and treat adults who are lazy like children by giving them everything. Who is being the greedy one then?
1
Costco is a warehouse and they pay well. The warehouse I worked at as a temped paid their employees over $15/hr. My dad worked at a factory that paid over $21/hr and now he works at a factory that pays him over $70,000/yr and he only works 40 hours a week. Look at the BLS. Good producing is over $25/hr. Transporting and warehousing over $22/hr. Retail and leisure and hospitality were the lowest at $16/hr and $13/hr respectively.
1
The Bush tax cuts helped the economy. After 9/11 the economy slipped and we were able to stabilize it. What ruined it was bailouts and lack of competition, not tax cuts. The threat of higher taxes also has been hurting the economy. Taxes went up under Obama and the economy is terrible. Think about, I give you $20 to provide a service to me and the government takes a certain percent of that from you and takes a certain percent from me for paying you. That is less money for you and me to.......
