A lot of what is being shown here are elective in a way and really should be paid out of pocket. Problem is, since healthcare insurance is a form of payment, it has become healthcare.

If you want to improve health in the US get rid of the employer based healthcare insurance. To do that get rid of the payroll tax. Doing so will have employers pay a higher wage/salary instead of healthcare benefits so individuals can buy their own insurance and use insurance for cases of emergencies as what happens with car insurance.

@eyyy2271 it isn't that simple and would create more of a mess in the US.
1
@processlayer1212 it won't be a small and simple tax to do university healthcare. And defense spending is low overall. Cutting the military budget will do nothing to fund universal healthcare.
1
@processlayer1212 compare our GDP to those 5 nations. Since the 70s defense spending has dropped in terms of percent of GDP.
1
@processlayer1212 one, we have to follow NATO. Next, we do have a lot to lose in the US. And the military does more than do war.
1
@processlayer1212 I don't agree with everything the military does, but compared to other government programs defense spending is low. We also do more than just go to war.
1
@processlayer1212 how will it reduce poverty?
1
@processlayer1212 we already do that.
1
@processlayer1212 cutting defense spending will not cover tuition (college should not be free anyways). Also, the US spend over 400 billion dollars on welfare as is. Cutting defense spending will do little to improve that.
1
@processlayer1212 poor people can get loans. The value in college is that you are investing in yourself to accomplish a long term goal. Also, most in college can be self taught.
1
@processlayer1212 learn money management.
1
@mrtekbunny how so?
1
There is irony in that.

We have the best quality and access. Cost is an issue but you get what you pay for. Also, what makes pay so high is hospitals have to give care regardless of how you pay and many simply don't pay. The gap has to be made up somewhere.
1
@nancymesek we have some of the best outcomes.
1
@omnibussy hospitals have to give you care regardless if you can pay. That is why our system costs so much to begin with. Many receive care and do not pay, thus the gap has to be made up somewhere. As for you and cancer, the US has the highest cancer survival rate in the world. However, cancer is a serious illness with low survival rate overall. Other nations simply stop giving cancer patients care because they direct limited resources on patients with a higher survival rate, and it also keeps cost down.
1
@omnibussy if you don't pay the bill creditors call. If you file for bankruptcy you will be left alone. If you are filing for bankruptcy, though, you have many financial issues to begin with. Not saying our system is perfect, I am all for reform. But to completely tear it down and restart is not wise.

@whyispinkysoinsane7898 read the Emergency Medical and Treatment Labor Act The ER cannot turn back patients. That is why, in healthcare, you often get care and get billed later. In some cases you are told upfront what you will pay.
1
@ralphhowes if you have diabetes you should be taking care of it. You can go to the ER and they have to take you if you are in trouble no matter what. No questions ask. Single payer will make things worse in this nation as you clog it up even more and it will be far less efficient.
