@cptmiller132 ok, and what kind? Seeing the stats it is saying that someone killing an intruder is the same as someone doing a drive by. Again, these facts are vague and we need to dig deeper. This is the problem with just saying "facts". Depending on the definition you can obtain any result you want. If I shoot an intruder in my home would you consider that a bad thing?

@ThePinkMan ok, what kind if crime? That is the issue. OK is number 1 in domestic abuse. CA and NY are 2 and 7, respectively, in robberies. You are lumping crime in as a whole where you need to consider what type of crime people are concerned about. People are concerned about robberies, vandalisms, muggings, etc. A drunk man beating his wife is bad, but it is isolated to just them. My neighbor beating his wife does not make me feel unsafe walking the streets. What does is knowing people are getting robbed and mugged in the streets.

It comes down to what type of crime. A domestic abuse is a violent crime, but it is isolated between two parties. A mugging on the street is also a violent crime, but it is not isolated by two parties. OK is number 1 in domestic abuse. That skews the numbers.

Someone needs to tell democrats that you need clear definitions of what facts are. By some definitions a man beating his wife is the same as a man mugging someone on the street that they are not connected with all. They are both a violent crime. Now which situation makes society more dangerous? While domestic abuse is bad, it is a situation isolated between two parties. A mugging on the street leads to more dangerous situations on the streets for people who are trying to mind their own business.

@ruinbreaker7051 both situations are not equally bad. A man beating his wife is bad, but it is isolated to just those two. There is essentially one victim, the wife. Someone on the streets mugging people makes everyone on the streets a victim. Why? It makes the streets more dangerous. If my neighbor is beating his wife I am not going to have more fear walking the streets. If people are getting mugged on the streets then I will. That is what concerns people, are our streets safe? Am I safe?

There was a "fact" floating around how there is a school shooting every week in this nation. Well, that is only true when you water down the definition of a school shooting. It was comparing a shooting that happened in Parkland to someone committing suicide on school grounds at night. The former is a guy shooting people at random. The latter is someone killing only themselves, on school grounds at night with no one around. Both are technically "school shootings" in that it is a shooting occurring on school grounds. But they are clearly different. That is my point, not all violent crimes are the same. Are they bad? Yes. but as I said, a man beating is wife is different than someone on the streets pushing others in front of subways. And it is also why the courts approach those incidents differently. If a man beats his wife and another man randomly murders someone who they are not connected with, who will get the harsher sentence in court?

@BardaLiefson anyone can change the standards on stats. Take school shootings for example. After Parkland a talking point was that there was a school shooting a week. However, the people saying that were comparing Parkland to someone committing suicide with a gun, at night, on a school ground.

@knavishknight when you water down the definition of what a "school shooting' is you will get inflated stats. Again, that stat equated the Parkland shooting to some kid committing suicide with a gun on school grounds at night.

The problem with the facts is they are vague. By some definitions a domestic abuse between a husband and wife is on par with murder. So if you have a situation where a man beats his wife in OK and in NY you have a guy mugging someone on the street that they are not connected with, they are listed as both a violent crime. Now which situation is more dangerous to the community as a whole?

A mugging on the street is a guy attacking someone on the street they are not connected with. If my neighbor beats his wife it does not make the streets I walk on more dangerous. What does are people who are out there mugging people, murdering people, robbing people, causing vandalism. It is about who is the victim here. Yes, the wife being beating is a victim and it is a problem. But she is the only one in all reality. Someone on the streets mugging people and robbing them makes everyone in the public a victim or potential victim.

@cptmiller132 OK also has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation. The number one method for suicide in the US is with a gun. So that can skew the stats. You are now giving me more evidence to prove my points. That is we can't just say "facts". We need to dig deeper. You can't just broadly make a claim, you need to dig deeper.

@erenyeager2964 no, my "hypothetical" is to show how vague these stats are. You can look at them from many angles. I say all the time that facts are at the bottom of Bloom's Taxonomy. You can give two experts the same set of facts and receive two different, but legit answers. That is the reality.

@cptmiller132 what kind of gun violence? Most suicides are via guns. OK has a high suicide rate. A suicide by a gun is labeled, by many, gun violence. Think about that.

Here is something for you. OK is number 1 in domestic abuse, a violent crime. NY and CA have a higher robbery rate compared to OK. Robbery is also a violent crime. Now which is worse? That is the issue. Yes, OK is ranked high in violent crime, but a high domestic abuse rate skews the results.

To be fair, you can go by per capita. However, OK stats are skewed by being number 1 in domestic abuse. NY and CA have more robberies. Both domestic abuse and robberies are violent crimes. The latter is what people are worried about.

If you want to go by just the population numbers, OK having a smaller population skews their per capita stance, arguably. For example, say you have A: 100 people with 10 violent crimes. 6 are domestic abuse, 2 are murders, 2 are assaults B: 1,000 with 90 crimes. 50 are murders, 30 are assaults, 10 are domestic abuse A has a 10% crime rate where B has a 9%. However, 60% of A crime are domestic. So their domestic abuse numbers, due to their small population, skews the results. As I said, people care about robberies, vandalisms, muggings, people being pushed in front of subways.

@danesullivan5151 I am not downplaying domestic violence. I am saying that both domestic violence and murder are both labeled as "violent crime". However, in the courts they are charged differently. Murder usually receives a more severed charge.

However, we can both agree that one is more severe than the other. Also, the other issue is what people are really concerned about when walking the streets. My neighbor beating his wife does not lead to me feeling unsafe walking the streets. What will are people pushing others in front of subways. Both are violent crimes, but think about what will worry people more.
