Wow, $15/hr. That is over $30,000/yr. A graduate student earns that much if they are given an RA offer (and that is around the max). So I guess someone doing a job that a high school dropout can do is worth as much as a graduate student. Bernie, and anyone who supports him are economically illiterate. There isn't one single good reason to even have a min. wage.

If everything inflated than cell phones would cost at least $4000 (comparing to the price of a brick phone in the late 80s). But cell phones are better and cheaper than in the past. Same is with labor. Look at blockbuster. Their employees are now worth $0/hr. Their value went down. Not everything inflates and some jobs decrease in value. Now your chart is deceptive. While number wise hourly compensation has gone down, look at what people can buy now. Smart phones, better cars that last longer and get better mileage, HDTVs, high speed internet. In the 50s almost no on owned a TV, I have on and 4 computers in my apartment. I am not rich. Quality of goods and services have gotten better thus they have gotten cheaper. People have more disposable cash now than in the past. Look past the numbers and look a little deeper when you do research.

CriminalGameplay I agree with Dazlindale1 on this issue. What you also have to look at is that Denmark has only 5 million people, a population that is less than 30 of your states. Not really a sound comparison when comparing it to the US. Also, Denmark does not have a mandated min. wage.

Jason King Walmart has low prices but they are not that much lower than other grocery and retail stores. If they raised prices customers will go elsewhere where service is better. Also, why the attack on McDonalds and Walmart? They are not the only ones who pay low wages. Never mind that the can't afford higher wages.

Jason King If the CEOs of Walmart and McDonalds were to earn $0 the employees there will earn an extral $0.001 per hour. Their profit margins are thin. They make a lot due to their massive amount of stocks they have out there. Those shareholders want to see their investment grow (who are, BTW not mega rich also). If the CEO of Walmart and McDonalds were to raise wages that will hurt profits to where they will be earning in the red. That will ruin the value of the company and thus stocks. The shareholders will then vote out the CEOs and hire new ones. In short, they simply can't afford higher wages. Plus, what about smaller companies such as Hy Vee or Raleys?

Jason King The Walton family are not the CEOs of walmart. And the Walton family earn that much due to them owning around 50% of stocks of Walmart. The Walton family can't just give money away because that would mean less money for investing in Walmart and growing it which creates jobs and increases the value of stocks for other shareholders.

Ruixiang Wang A flaw in that statement about minimum wage going up and jobs going up is that there are several variables that are involved in overall job growth. A minimum wage increase of a dollar or so won't effect overall job growth due to other variables being involved. My home state has a min. wage higher than the federal. We also have low taxes and just gave a company a 1.8 million dollar tax break to build a factory here. This business will pay at least $26/hr and is creating a lot of jobs. Now what created the jobs, the higher min. wage or the tax breaks? People who tie the min. wage to overall job growth are confused and simply don't know how statistics work.

Terry Kuek And that is a different issue all together. But even with that the top 10% is only around $112,000/yr. Even Bernie Sanders said that the problem is the ultra ultra rich, the top 0.01% or around there. But even at that, a company like Walmart is as large as it is due to stocks. And they pay competitive wages compared to other retail stores, and in some cases more. And offer cheaper goods so it works out great for the market.

Ruixiang Wang Research has shown that there is job lost. It is with target groups though such as teens and other low wage workers. Hours are cut as well. So while you are forcing how much people can earn per hour, you are not per week. Min. wage increases have been small, thus all job lost gets lost in the statistical noise. You don't see the teenage job lost because it is a small variable in a complex economy. But when you do an analysis you see that jobs are lost in target groups.

Phantomhive Colleges are not that expensive, there are community colleges and JuCos one can attend. And during college it is work. I worked hours at college to get where I am at. I worked in class and at a job. A $15/hr min. wage would mean why go to college? I can live just fine off of that. People are paid what they are worth in the market. It is economically illiterate to force a company to pay someone more than what they are worth which means that company can't afford them.

JWSMusic11 The reason why the cost of groceries are going up is because of government policies such as the min. wage. We are, due to technology, producing more food than ever. Prices should be dropping but expensive regulations leads to price increases. It is true, several people don't want to work.

KungFuChess Actually the min. wage is at an all time high. I guess you missed my point about farm workers being well off before tractors. Not every worker increases in value, some workers decrease in value or remain the same. That is how the economy works.

Phantomhive Almost anyone qualifies for a loan. You can do that. As long as you get a degree that is worth it you will be fine. But in the end college is work. People are lazy. I make the equivalent of $15/hr for a fulltime job. I am a grad. student. So someone who is a high school dropout deserves as much as me? No. That is the harsh answer. Sorry, you are paid that much because you are worth that much. Don't like it, work harder. " That isn't true. One, productivity is up due to technology. Those that invested in technology and invented it are the ones that got raises. That is because the price of the cell phone dropped and the quality is better. Same with other goods and services. That statistic you showed me is very deceptive and when broken down means nothing.

Phantomhive You have shown me one statistic and it is very deceptive. Your problem is that you are looking at the dollar number when looking at wages, but not the dollar value. Cars, computer, phones, ipods, overall life expectancy and so on are better than they were in the 40s. To say wages haven't caught up with productivity is being deceptive at best, but most likely is false. You have to look at that. You can't just throw numbers around without breaking them down. My girlfriend earns $8/hr and is using that wage to pay off a Mazda RX8. Not really a starvation wage. You are simply paid what you are worth in society. It is up to you to figure out how to earn a living. As far as college and loans are concerned, go to a cheap college and get a degree that is valued high. Don't get an art degree or women's study degree. I have $50,000 of student loan, I have a plan to pay it off without it ruining my life. It isn't hard but does require work. If for some offbeat chance he does have fun banging your head on the wall wondering why you and your friends are not getting better but those that work hard do.

Suomy Nona My boss is 4 times superior than me. He has the PhD, he is the one who created the project that I am working on. He is the one that hired me. I feel that he is worth 4 times more than me, really he is worth more. I respect myself and time as well. I can take off when I want. I have a flexible schedule. I can sleep in tomorrow if I desire as long as I get work done. I would say I have it great.

Suomy Nona You have no clue how corporations work. A lot of their profits either 1, goes into investing and creating more stores thus more jobs, or 2, goes into improving the values of the stocks where the stock holders see their investment go up. Walmart simply can't afford higher wages.

My mommy and daddy were poor, I had to pull out loans. I wasn't an idiot but instead went to a cheap college and to a degree in the physical sciences.

So when Walmart opened 2 new stores in my city that wasn't them using their profits to grow the company? Walmart has the challenge of keeping shareholders happy. If they squander their profits the shareholders will vote in another CEO because they want to see their stocks grow. Now you may say that is bad but Walmart has a lot of stores at convenient locations and time and sells goods for cheap. You know, things that help out the poor. Other options are Raleys, Hy Vee, Safeway and so on, stores with less goods for sell, higher prices, less locations and they are not open 24 hours. Things that make it harder on those with little money. Also you attack Walmart, fine, what about other companies? Those that I listed pay their workers the same as Walmart. Why don't you attack them?

And with me never hearing of them they don't have many stores thus not many employees, why no complaints on that? I have more than a Safeway at my city.
