Julian N, these amendments are supposed to be hard lines so that no one can move the goal posts on issues. On gun laws we have laws that we agree fit within the 2nd amendment. Without the 2nd amendment you set the grounds for a gun ban.

Fried beanies, that is true. A pencil is, by definition, an "assault weapon" if used correctly.

Fernando Aragones, there is more to it than what Kyle presented. Banning "assault weapons" is very vague. That can lead to a gun ban. For example, 100 round drums and full autos are banned, but yet a mass shooting still happened. So we ban expanded magazines and "assault weapons". Even after that if we have another mass shooting, what is the next step? This is why we have a Constitution, it was to stop the slippery slope. Right now people are saying "we don't want to ban guns, we just want to ban assault weapons and limit magazine sizes". Now a decade later it comes down to "we want to ban all semi autos and all guns that hold magazines", then 10 years later it is "we want to only ban all guns except single shot rifles and revolvers" and so on. Where is the stopping point in these laws?

Chaos Theory, to answer your question basically no. Adam Lanza did, by definition, steal his gun from his mother. But he was living with his mother so no new law would have stopped this. The talks of gun reform by the left is all pure emotions. When looked at objectively I feel we do not have a major gun violence problem. Do we have a problem? Yes. But we have a problem in traffic deaths, or people with HIV, and an issue of high school dropouts. Do we have major marches for those? No. Do we work in solving them? Yes. I am all for lowering gun violence, but there are minor things we can do as this is, overall, a minor issue when you look at it objectively. A part of that is enforcing gun laws on the books. Another part is helping the actual person. Attacking guns is not the solution to me.

"regulated militia", not "regulated guns".

Anti-gun nuts are OK with dead kids as they can use them as shields to push gun control.

Ben, DUI and murder is committing an action. Alcohol, in relation to DUI, and cars are the object. We don't ban the object when the action is already ban. Banning cars and alcohol in the name of stopping DUIs is preventing law abiding citizens from possessing such items. Same with murders and guns. Murder is the action which is already illegal. Banning the gun is banning the object so law abiding citizens cannot own it.

Jordan, plenty of countries in Europe has access to guns. Also, they have much lower crime in general compared to the US. If you were to remove all gun murders from the US the murder rate will still be higher than most European countries. That is not an issue of guns but an issue of violence.

The US has a murder rate that is around 5 times higher than the UK. If you were to remove all gun murders from the US the murder rate in the US will still be 2 times higher than the UK. If you want to talk statistics you have to do so in the proper way. What I just showed you is that the higher murder rate in the US is not purely a gun issue but an issue of culture.
