They do. The problem is that most homeless people suffer through mental issues. The resources are not there to help them. And when I say resources I do not mean money, I mean doctors and healthcare professionals.

And? People die. Is this sad? Sure, but people die for many reasons. Why don't you allow him into your home Kyle? Or any other leftist that watches this show.

"Maybe the poor man should have a home of his own?" Maybe. Why was he homeless to begin with? "Like maybe the guy should have had the ability to obtain a well paying job? Maybe he should have had the option to get help when he needed it? " To what degree do you want to offer that to people? I am all for helping others, but eventually you have to pull your own weight. Harsh reality is that if you cannot produce enough to fend for yourself to progress society, and you have no friends and family who are willing to help you, than what are you worth in society?
2
bryan s, those billions spent on defense is a drop in the bucket overall. It is around 3% of GDP. We already spend more on social welfare programs.
2
bryan s, I am willing to do that.
2
"You do realize it is net cheaper to house everyone than to leave them homeless, right?" That is not true as many who are homeless have mental problems and need extreme help. Giving them a home will create more problems. But I always find it funny how leftists feel government programs are supposed to be cheaper.
2
" what's wrong with giving free housing to people that are homeless and can't afford it?" It is about investment and limited resources. Are you going to give your money away to someone who gives you nothing in return? Why give these people homes when they produce nothing? In fact, they can cost you more money. Most of these homeless have mental problems. If you spend money on a home for them and they destroy it you are now in a deeper hole.

"And logic dictates that letting a homeless person freeze to death isn't very humane nor productive for society." Arguably it is productive. This person is not producing anything. Why use up limited resources on them? This is discussed in advanced economic classes and in advanced medical and nursing classes. In nursing school students are required to read a book where the morality of killing off the very old and sick are discussed. Why waste resources on people who produce nothing? "Getting homeless people off the streets and into employment - now that sounds productive, no?" If they are actually willing to produce, and I support local programs that can do that. But if they are not willing to produce than let them die. "It's like breaking cycles of poverty and ensuring the working classes have access to good education" Everyone has access to a K-12 education, and low income schools give out free meals to their students both breakfast and lunch. What more do you want? At some point they have to put in the effort themselves. "without public funding my cousin wouldn't be earning his six-figure salary today." Great, that is one case. This other case here counters that.
2
"What value does producing an F-35 bring to society?" Advancement in technology in defense. If we do not do that another country can conquer us.
2
"I understand your thought process but I disagree with the notion we should divulge from empathy seeing as this is what also drives us as a species" I 100% agree that we are human and emotions are a part of our nature. I fully support some kind of program to help out the poor and homeless if it is ran at the state and local level. However, these people have to produce. You can have a city run homeless shelter where they work for the city in some way as in cleaning up parks or maybe cleaning up certain areas in the city. But there comes a point where you have to tell these people no if they refuse to work. That is also why I support it being ran locally as it can be micromanage. " Children are the biggest moochers on the planet, but it's in our best interest to educate and look after them in hopes that one day they may reciprocate..." That is the point of K-12 education. You take young kids with potential and train them to be productive. This is an adult that had that opportunity and failed. At some point you have to tell them no. " Emotions will always be part of humanity..." I agree, and we should factor that in. However, we cannot become over emotional and make asinine decisions.
2
"Are you seriously advocating for people to be left to die?" What is your suggestion? Why are you not taking in homeless people? " Many fall into homelessness because of mental illness, debt & addiction." I agree, and the cases are extreme and are not easy to fix. Sorry to break this to you but the government does not have a magic wand. "these are arguments for or against legal euthanasia for those in terminal pain or illness, it has absolutely nothing to do with ECONOMICS" Economics has a large part in it. " I dunno, maybe people like Betsy DeVos to be kept well away from public education" You are changing the topic now. "You're more concerned with trying to get bullshit religious dogma back into the classroom" Nope.
2
"Did you really think that frantically googling it on the spot would somehow salvage your unlettered op?" I did not Google anything. What are you even talking about?
2
Wait? Sweden? I thought they practice "democratic socialism" there?
2
I thought Colorado is swimming in money because of weed? Why can't they help them?

Burg Skeletal, since 1952 we have increased taxes on everyone like the payroll tax. Also, federal government spending has increased while defense spending as been decreasing as a percent of GDP.
1
Healthcare takes up $3.3 trillion out of our economy.
1
" Half of discretionary spending is NOT a drop in the bucket lol." Compared to overall GDP it is. Also, I look at total federal spending. Don't cherry pick here. " It's always this "only 3% of GDP" argument when someone tries to justify our out-of-control spending on military" Yes, because with NATO we have to spend a certain amount. Also, 3% is small at that point. "But when someone proposes a much smaller amount spent to help people in some way, then they freak out and say "How do we pay for it?!!"" Because it isn't a small amount in all reality.
1
bryan s, I am putting these numbers in perspective.
1
Many of those homes are unlivable. Look at the homes in Detroit you can buy for a dollar. They are listed as "homes" but you cannot live there.
1
How many homeless people have you invited into your home?
1
Kyle, once again, shows he does not understand economics. He feels taking money from defense, from people who actually work and produce, and giving it to the homeless is a wise investment.
1
Ashlee Beck, if you have no problem with your money going to the homeless than donate to a charity or volunteer at shelters. Or push your local government to do something. That is based on your own personal decision and money at that point. That is your choice to invest your money as you deem is best in your eyes. But for society as a whole the government has rules in how to spend money and what is best for society. Paying for a military that actually produces something is better than paying for a homeless guy who will produce nothing.
1
" Do you understand the marginal propensity to consume? " Yes I do. Do you? Do you know that it differs between different people depending on their lifestyle and investments?
1
Ken Hudson, I am a doctorate candidate. At this point "re-education" will not work on me.

Green Square, I never said we should not be helping homeless people. I do support helping them. However there comes a point where you have to tell them no. And in reality people die. Homeless people dying does not bother me as I know it happens. That's life. 30,000 die a year in traffic accidents, do we ban driving to make that number zero? Tell me a solution to make the homeless rate zero?
1
" Go away and actually study," What should I study? Should I watch this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHoiVnID8vY
1
Green Square, so someone who refuses to work, who refuses to produce for society should be given a lot of help?
1
Green Square, you did not say anything to begin with.
1
Because this happens in other countries. Someone just posted a story of a homeless man dying recently in Sweden because of the cold. Leftists are taking this storying and using it to push their communist.....I mean "democratic socialism" agenda. It is sad really.

And here you are typing on high speed internet a comment on youtube.

"how is that capitalism work? How can capitalism prevents poor people die." You have to consider standards. With capitalism the standards go up to where someone can be "poor" in comparison but still have nice accessories. With socialism the standard is lowered. What that means is that sure, we "help" the poor, but do we really? We may give them food and they may live long compared to other people, but if the life expectancy is lower overall is that a success? To put it this way, in the land of the blind the one eye man is king, that's socialism. With capitalism everyone can see, just some not as well. Socialism brings people down and lowers the standard.

" Pass a minimum wage bill, so Walmart workers won't have to depend on government aid anymore." Most Walmart workers already earn above the min. wage. Also, there are more employers than just Walmart. "Also pass a bill that guarantees basic welfare to everyone" So raise the economic floor so that zero is no longer zero? Compare it to this, say you are running a race, as in 1 mile. Some people will run it faster. So your solution is to allow everyone to start 1/8 of a mile ahead. The slow people will still be slow. That does not solve the problem. You will still have homeless people with your idea.
