Not willing to compromise is where you lose. There are debates on these issues. Medicare for all is very debatable. Saying it is not debatable is simply trying to silence your opponent because you have no argument.

Pocahontas at it again.

" We can't have common sense policies..." They are not "common sense" as there is a debate to begin with.

Ryan, as a healthy person you can avoid insurance. We are talking about "living". I will be alive. That is the low standards you are setting.
2
Gouky, exactly. Those who say it is "not debatable" are trying to silence their opposition. This is a very debatable topic.

They exist to take care of the inelastic demand of healthcare.
1
A. S. VanHoose, there is a lot more to it than that. Notice what I said about inelastic demand. Healthcare is not always that way. Many cases in healthcare you do have time to shop around and force companies to compete. We don't. Why? Because healthcare is covered by healthcare insurance when insurance should be there for expensive, unplanned situations. Like car insurance pays for a car accident but not oil changes. Now what is it that way? It is because insurance is a form of payment due to the payroll tax. To me we should remove the payroll tax and allow consumers to buy their own plans. That way insurance is insurance. Also, it forces companies to compete and thus prices will go down. Our healthcare is expensive due to two reasons. 1. Our R&D and quality is much better compared to other countries 2. We do not have a free market system. But to simply say our healthcare is expensive is not an argument in itself. It is a talking point.

James Reeno, where's the confusion?

More like you brainwash her.

The phrase "living wage" is subjective. I earned $5.15/hr and was fine. I worked for years. I understand economics.
1
Ryan, I was paid that much in 2004. Either way it doesn't matter. I can prove to you that by earning $6/hr I can save $200 a month if I manage my budget well. "Living wage" is 100% subjective.
1
Ok, so $6/hr at 40 hours a week for 4 weeks. That is $960 a month. In my city I live in you can get a studio for $545/month, all utilities paid including internet. Now it is the size of a motel room with a bathroom, living area, and closet. And you share a kitchen with three other people. But it is $545/month. For travel it is within walking distance from my home so no car needed. No gas expense there. For food I keep a running food budget for myself and I can do fine on $100/month. For cell phone I do not need the one I have but I do at $90/month. So we are at $735/month in expenses. $960-$735 is $225. That leaves around $25 extra for whatever. Say my food expense was actually $125/month (it isn't, $100 is really high as is). I can also cut out my cell phone bill as well by going with a cheaper plan. But I will keep it. So that is around $200/month I am saving. One can go cheaper with roommates as well. But the point is that "living wage" is 100% subjective. It depends on someone's situation. You can't just make a blanket statement like that.
1
Artaneius, a "living wage" is subjective. Statistically around 90% of people earning $9.50/hr or less are not poor to begin with. When I was dating my ex she had a job that paid $8.50/hr. She bought a $15,000 car with it. How? We were living together and thus split all the bills including rent. It all depends on one's living situation.
1
"Living wage" is an appeal to emotion phrase used to push an agenda. Same as "fair share". it appeals only to emotions and not actual facts or logic.
1
Malachi, 1. You have to make adjustments to pay rent 2. The place I talked about offers internet for free. I can also get it from work if I wanted to. 3. The place I am talking about has one centralized kitchen and four living places off of it. Picture a kitchen with four doors and each door leads to a place with a living area, bathroom and closet. That is what it is. Each door locks. They are studio apartments with shared kitchens.

" and if you break a leg or get sick then what?" I will find a way to get by. I have not used healthcare, to that degree, since high school when I was on my parents' insurance. I have used it for routine check ups and physicals, but that's it. I don't do anything where I can get a broken leg, and I have never been that sick. Now, what is my point in all of this? My point is not to say that someone can live on that little of money, or that they don't need insurance. My point is that a "living wage" is 100% subjective. It depends on someone's situation. I have a friend who is diabetic. Their case is different. But they also live with their parents. You can't just saying "living wage" as it really means nothing as I just shown. It is an appeal to emotion statement at that point.

" You realize that's against the law, right? Not having insurance, you can get in legal trouble for that" Actually it ins't. The individual mandate is gone. Also, even when it was the IRS has to catch you. When you filed for taxes they simply asked if you have insurance. Mark yes on the box and move on.

"I disagree about leaving it up to states. There are millions of people who are unfortunate enough to live in states controlled by Republicans, and we shouldn't throw those people under the bus" That's fascism right there. You are an outsider looking into a state feeling they are being oppressed in some way or do not have a government you support and thus you feel you should come and force your way onto them. This is one of many reasons why the founding fathers pushed for state rights. The organization and need for government varies and is dependent on the states. One state may support one issue based on the citizens there while another state supports another issue. Why should you come in to a state where you don't live in, vote in or pay taxes in and force the citizens there what to do? How would you feel if they did the same thing to your state? As for progressives living there they can always move to another state and still remain US citizens. That is why state rights is the way to go.

"Why would a corporation or shareholders pay any CEO that much money??? What do they gain by paying such vast salaries??? " Great point. Based on leftists argument corporations would benefit by paying CEOs the min. wage.

"Every other modern-industrialized has one form of single-payer healthcare or another." So. " We have ranked dead last in healthcare according to the Commonwealth Fund." A completely arbitrary ranking. Anyone can make a ranking that can make any country, including the US, to be number 1 or last. There are many variables to the stats. Those rankings heavily weigh overall life expectancy. However, two professors showed that if you remove car accidents and murders the US is number 1 in life expectancy. Factor that in and the US is near the top in healthcare. Also, what makes the Common Wealth Fund so important? "but you will lose that argument every time if you are in favor of our current system." Not true. Two professors wrote a book showing how our current system is strong, it just needs minor changes.
1
" I don’t believe we should compromise on policies that are popular with the majority of the U.S. population " We don't run on mob rule. Also, if they are popular the states would have them. As is 80% in Colorado said not to universal healthcare. " and that every other modern-industrialized already has" Not an argument as they have many shortcomings themselves and are not doing better than the US. "Also most of the time, the those in Congress that oppose a single-payer system, do so because they are receiving money from the health-insurance industry and various pharmaceutical companies." Not true. There are several reasons to oppose single payer such as the cost, bureaucracies, or the fact that healthcare is 1/6 of our economy and major changes will create a recession. "They don’t have substantive reasons to disagree with Medicare-For-All." Except there are a lot of debates against it. The fact that you don't see them and just dismiss it on the idea of corruption is a problem.
1
"Nobody cares what "2 professors" wrote in a book." Ok, why should you care what Kyle has to say? Or some arbitrary ranking? Also, they are professors. Last I checked one was the chair of their department.
1
"Medicare for All has the support of 60% of the American people according to polls. That's enough for me." If 60% supported slavery would you support it? If 60% supported making abortion illegal would you push for that? Also, those polls are vague. When more information is given typically polling data changes. If you were to ask those same individuals if they would support higher taxes as well would they support universal healthcare?
1
anticorncob6, republicans have compromised. Under Obama they compromised on the tax bill that remove the tax cuts. Democrats have not compromised. They had backdoor deals on Obamacare and shut down the government on the tax and spending bill. Now with Trump they are all opposing him.
