  2. The min. wage is lame. There is not one single good reason to even have a min. wage. Kyle wants to talk about the real people world we can. If you raise the price of labor what businesses are going to do is hire less, especially those with low skill.

  6. +God Was Bored Getting a doctorate isn't the only way to become skilled. There are several who are really well off and don't have doctorates. When people are have more skills and are able to generate more wealth then society as a whole gets better. You say that someone needs to work fast food. They will be the young working a new job or the retired doing business work. Also with new generated wealth you have new technology to where people won't be working as much, especially in low skilled jobs such as fast food. Prices go down and thus everyone does better. That is the goal we should be pushing for. Those who support the min. wage and increasing it are looking at simply money, not wealth creation. If the min. wage goes up and making the false assumption that there will be no job loss or price increase, then why push for more wealth creation? Society as a whole does not get better at that point.

Someone with no other assets and just $10 in their pocket has more wealth than 25% of the country. A homeowner has 30 times more wealth than a renter. A homeowner has around 60% of their wealth tied into their home. Beyond owning a home the average person has little wealth. Those on top own multi-billion dollar businesses. That is why they have so much wealth. " and prevent a 350-1 income ratio for business owners to employees" The reason for the large income gap is because of policies such as the progressive tax. The top 10% earned 40% of the income but paid 70% of taxes. They are going to get their share for doing plus 30% of the work in society.

  8. +IheartChiroptera You are correct in that increasing the price of labor to 50% will not increase prices by 50%. A reason why is because businesses will cut hour. You are making a requirement in how much to pay per hour, but not per week. A business will cut hours, go with less workers, and close down their doors earlier. So the min. wage worker won't be earning more. One area where are you incorrect is also the 23 cent raise in prices. Where does that figure come from? In some cases it will be $0.00 increase in prices, they will just cut hours. For small businesses it will be an increase. Herman Cain explained this to Bill Clinton in the 90s in how more business cost leads to less workers because in the competitive market you simply can't raise prices. If all it took as a 23 cent raise then why don't businesses raise prices up to begin with and make that much more in profit? The answer is that it isn't that simple. The min. wage does nothing to stimulate the economy. To stimulate the economy you need to promote wealth creation, not set artificial price floors. There isn't one single good reason to even have a min. wage.

  9. +Tensai55 Yes there are workers to can work min. wage jobs. They are typically those just entering the workforce, retired people and people working just for supplemental income for themselves or a household as seen when close to 90% of those earning $9.50/hr or less are not poor. Much of our economy is not based off of those jobs. If those workers become too expensive than businesses will just cut hours. The will hire less, close down their doors earlier, or close down all together. When NY raised their min. wage McDonalds got rid of workers. None of those companies make enough to pay enough. They simply can't afford higher wages.

  10. +Tensai55 Retail and restaurants don't generate that much value. Factory jobs actually pay a lot, not slightly more. The lowest I have seen is $18/hr, more than twice. What are more people working min. wage jobs are not the young or retired? It is due to labor to labor substitution. Business don't want to hire a young worker who will most likely be temporary or a retired person for part time at a higher wage. They will hire someone else at that higher wage. Plus the min. wage increases prices causing people to work more jobs. Yes retail and gas station is a basis for our economy. But even they have a price. They can even go to automation. Think about self checkouts. And restaurants will go away if the price goes up too much. McDonalds will hire less, they did so in NY. They will just make people wait longer. And in the end they will increase prices. The pure fact is that these companies can't afford the higher wage. It is called basic math. The money is not there. Plus Walmart and McDonalds make up a small portion of the economy. What about other retail businesses or small businesses?

I have worked at a restaurant, it is not hard work. I have been to McDonalds, the service and food is terrible, they simply are not worth that much. " Oh and virtually all management positions are salary, not hourly, and you are typically expected to work at least 50 hours a week " And as a graduate student I work more than that while on salary. Business owners do as well. "And someone actually did the math for McDonalds. If they raised every employees' wages to $15 an hour, to keep generating the same profits, they would only need to raise prices by 15 cents " Then why don't businesses raise prices up 15 cents right now and earn that much more in profits? The answer is that it isn't that simple. "And of course, consider this. No one ever questions a multi-million dollar raise for a CEO" Compared to the entire workers that CEO covers they don't earn much. If the CEO of walmart were to earn $0 and his salary were to be spread out across all the workers they will earn an extra $0.64/hr, not very much. Remember, that is if the CEO of walmart were to earn $0. But really, do you really think that fast food workers are worth that much? If you do than you clearly don't know much about the market.

  14. +Tensai55 I never got a free ride. I have several students who don't get free rides. I worked several part time jobs at once to earn money. It is called work. You are not just given things in life. And volunteering is important, just because internships are not paid doesn't mean you shouldn't do them. Volunteering is how you gain experience and connections. Recessions happen around the same rate. Why has this recovery been poor? It is because of higher taxes, regulations and spending all by the federal government. During this last recession the federal min. wage went up over $2/hr. Recovery is slow for a reason. "And college recruiters have a record of lying to students about what kinds of jobs they are likely to get upon graduation. " It isn't lying, it is showing them their options. In the end it requires work. I agree high school counselors suck, but that is your tax dollars at work.

That is one argument I have against the min. wage. A manager is no longer able to earn more because now a company has to pay all the other workers more. " And this attitude of looking down on ppl just because they settled for working at a fast food restaurant until they can find better work" The key word is settled. If you want to get better you have not settled. If you settled than you just want to work fast food and don't care. " living wage" A subjective term that doesn't mean anything. ""Also, that local Walmart that's hiring ppl for $10/hr, their prices haven't changed either despite paying their employees more" What about other businesses that are much smaller than Walmart?
