Tipping is a way for small businesses to afford to higher employees and the worker is able to earn more.  There are a lot of advantages to tipping.   If there were no tipping those workers will earn less or not even have a job. That restaurant in Pittsburgh seems fancy on their website.  They have a business model that does bring in more income. There isn't a single good reason to even have a min. wage.

  2. Jack Albrecht People who earn tips typically earn more as well than if they were to get paid the min. wage.  If you were to remove tips in our society than several people will become irate. If you are working at a job where you don't make enough tips than you need to consider getting a new one.  It is no different than someone working a min. wage job.  If you are not earning enough money than get a new one.

James Dagnan I am for change, I am for change that works.  The business in this video has very expensive meals, you can look at the menu online. It has $55 for reservations.  It is a business that attracts those with money and thus hires better workers. There are some businesses who simply can't afford to pay more.  Also, removing tips will actually make it so some workers end up making less.  I know several people who make a living on tips.  They are bartenders at nice bars, or valet drivers.  While no tips may work for some businesses it won't work for all.

  4. James Dagnan Because businesses at times can't afford that.  Plus, in a lot of cases employees will earn more than that just off their tips if they are willing to work during busy shifts. The simple fact is that you should find another job if you don't like the one you have. That brings up competition to where businesses will end up paying more to keep good employees.  And to think that businesses don't consider other models is not true.  Businesses do try to think of different models.  Tipping works great or other businesses because if they did pay a wage than those workers will most likely be making less. You also have to consider that business probably has more fulltime workers and they are willing to stay longer. How many people make a career working at a Denny's or Applebees.?  And how many work fulltime?  The restaurant I worked for couldn't do what this restaurant is doing because we had a lot of part time, short term workers.  Why should they put a lot into that business?  It wouldn't make sense to require part time workers to go to meetings often when they will be gone after a semester or two in college.

  5. James Dagnan If it works than other businesses will follow.  In a competitive market that is how it works out.  We can't force it though through the government.  Some businesses simply can't afford to pay higher wages, that is just the fact of it.

  6. Jack Albrecht If your wife has a steady job than you should be fine, especially in a small town were prices and cost of living is usually lower. But, you can't always get what you want.  I moved 2000 miles to get my job, and will move again to pursue a higher pay one.  Eventually I will have enough to retire early back close to my hometown.  If you want more money you have to work for it and earn it.

  7. AJHornet1 Businesses can't afford it.  Tips are on the wait staff at that point.  If you are terrible at your job than you won't get paid.  It is a way for certain workers to earn more than a business can afford and prices won't go up thus not hurting demand for the restaurant.

Jack Albrecht A lot of businesses simply can't afford to pay higher wages.  And a lot of tipped workers earn a lot in tips.  I wouldn't go to an Applebees if they raised their prices.  I pay the price for their food, and I pay the waitress/waiter in a tip if they do well.  If I want to save money and have no tip I can go to a non sit down restaurant and eat there.  Or I can buy the food and cook it myself.  As a whole there isn't a one size fits all system for businesses.  Tipping is great for a lot of businesses and what they can do.  Paying a higher wage could work for other businesses.  I can easily say that Bar Marco should be selling burgers and fries because that works well for a lot of companies in the US if you look at all our burger joints we have in this country.  But that isn't their model.

AJHornet1 There is something to that.  I don't need the waiter or waitress to take my order and bring me my food, I can do that myself.  I go to a sit down restaurant to have that and I tip the server if they were good.  Same as I don't need valet parking, but if use it I can tip if I want to.  It is an added luxury that I end up paying for with a tip.

  10. AJHornet1 I will give this as an example.  Go to Vegas, the workers there earn around $50,000 to $60,000 just parking cars.  People who earn tips get paid well in a lot of jobs, more so if they were paid a wage.  Removing tips is not the answer.

They offer a lot of goods and services for a very low price.  Drinks are free if you are gambling, food is cheap, if they have something like bowling it is cheap, rooms are cheap.  Casinos also donate a lot of money into the city to build a road for example, or to a private school.  One casino owner had a son who played for Bishop Gorman for football, he donated a ton of money to give them nice facilities.  Plus, this whole idea that "businesses can afford it" needs to stop, they can't.

  12. AJHornet1 Really?  That is your response?  Have you ever ran a business? Businesses simply can't afford to pay higher wages.  Sorry that the truth hurts but that is a fact.  If you think tips are not needed than start a restaurant business and pay a high wage, see how far that goes.

Blake B Most tipped workers would end up earning less if there weren't tipped.  A company won't be able to raise prices enough to pay their workers more because the increase in prices hurts demand.  Tipping has it so businesses can stay competitive and workers earn more than they would if they were paid a flat wage.

James Dagnan Not all businesses are the same.  Bar Marco has strict hours and are open during peak hours.  They have a $55 reservation fee, does a place like Applebees have that, or Denny's?  No.  Look at their menu, their prices are high. They attract customers with more money and typically attract better workers.  You clearly know nothing about business.

  15. James Dagnan I agree it could work for some companies, and we should leave it up to them to set it up if they like.  I am just against what some people are saying to ban tipping all together.

  16. In the end you will pay the company's employee through higher prices, and the average cost of food won't be 1-5% if there were to make up for the money the wait staff will be losing without tips.

  17. david ramziz In the end you do pay their salary.  Prices will go up and if they offer bad service you simply won't eat there.  But typically those earning tips earn more than if they were to make the min. wage.

  18. david ramziz You don't have to tip, but a lot of workers who rely on tips usually end up making more than if they were paid a wage.  If you don't tip you don't get good service the next time around.  Tipping improves service and actually increases the amount of money the worker ends up making.  There were waitresses that earned more than I did on a Sunday than I did all week working 40 hours at the restaurant I worked at.

ET_Studios So you just want to banish businesses who don't, in your eyes, make enough?  You know how many businesses will go under?  Do you know that is how monopolies are created?  Do you know how high the unemployment rate will be?  And the business's website has their prices and they are high priced items.  It is $55 for a reservation.  People who earn tips typically earn more than if they were to just make a wage, especially if they work on busy nights such as weekends.  Like a bartender who works on a Friday night is going to earn more than one who works during a Tuesday.  In the end, like anything else in life, it requires work.  As a whole you are paid the market rate.  It is up to you to find a way to make a living either by finding a way to earn more or cutting expenses.  You talked about how the min. wage ensure that people are paid for work.  The problem is that many people already are, or in some cases are over paid. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/prin1.t02.htm Look at the unit labor cost for the full service restaurant.  It has gone up 3.8%.  That means the price of labor is outpacing productivity.  All the min. wage does is raise prices and lower hours and job opportunities for those with low skilled.  And you slavery example is shallow.  With slavery you are forced to work, those people can always quite their job. There isn't a single good reason to even have a min. wage.  This idea that it is needed to pay for bills and rent is flawed in that those are subjective and different to people's needs.  Also, businesses are not charities, they just can't give money away.  In the end you are paid your market rate, you have to find a way to make a living yourself.
