michardav, that training to "upgrade" is very basic and is a couple day course. You are asking people to spend a semesters worth of training learning a completely new skill. That is the issue. Also, most jobs being replaced by automation are low skill jobs to begin with, the people doing them have little desire to actually learn anything new, especially in their 40s.
Yes, taxes were lowered, after years of having high taxes. High skill jobs are available. In fact, we have too few workers to fill those jobs. Right now under Trump we are seeing an increase in labor participation after years of it dropping, less initial claims, lower unemployment, and interest rates going up.

Dedier, there are numerous sources that give counter viewpoints. I know that if you use CPI inflation numbers that wages have been going down. But the Minneapolis Fed showed that with PCE inflation wages have gone up. Also, using GDP deflator wages have gone up as well. It isn't so much about what source is acceptable, information is valuable. It is that you have to look deep into the sources and see what methods they use. Someone using only one measure of inflation I question.
You also have to consider the shortcomings in inflation measurements. The CPI is around 100 years old, that is archaic. Inflation does not take into account situation like new product bias or better technology, New product bias is where a new product is more expensive when it first enters the market but quickly drops in price. Smart phones and flat screen TVs are examples. Better technology is how a good may be more expensive by dollar amount, but in the long run is cheaper. Cars are great examples in how they last longer, get better gas mileage and are cheaper. So there is that.
I am not saying that everything is great, nor that we can't improve. But you can't just say that wages have been going down when there is numerous evidence against that. You are looking at a complex issue and over simplifying it. I am all for improving a situation, but you have to try your best to fully understand an issue first, or understand much more than you do.
