Our GDP is over $18 trillion, those country's combine GDP is around $29 trillion. Our GDP is around 24% of the world. So when you start putting it into that perspective you realize that our defense spending is not that large. The discretionary budget is deceptive because if you look at the total budget you see that our social welfare programs take up a larger percentage of our budget. Defense spending makes up around 3% of our GDP where education spending makes up around 7% if you include state and local government. Kyle is presenting numbers in a deceptive way. If you want to have an intelligent argument you have to give out all the facts. If not you are just pushing propaganda. This is why the left continues to lose.

Defense spending is small if you look at percent GDP. With that it is around 3%. Our education budget, if you include state and local, is around twice that. So we spend more on education.

Alex Campbell: If you look at percent of GDP our defense spending is around 3%. We spend more on education than we do on defense. Also, with the federal budget we spend more on social welfare programs. I agree that the money the Pentagon lost is not great, but to me that is a sign that we need to have a limited federal government as opposed to expanding it. The limits are all listed in the Constitution. Defense spending is a part of that, thus social welfare programs should be cut and left up to the states. Considering how much they lost in the Pentagon who knows who much they lost in the social welfare programs.

Except K-12 education is ran locally. The federal programs for education are a joke and a waste.

Military spending is actually constitutional. The states can handle your drinking water and education. Even at that, in terms of percent GDP, we spend more on education than defense.

Salty Lemon, defense spending is constitutional. Conservatives support limited government within the bounds of the Constitution.

Marcus T, the poor in the US are well off compared to other countries. Also, we spend a lot of time and money in our defense trying to prevent violent conflict. It is not just used as a "killing machine" as you put it.

"He wants to fund this by cutting non-military spending and give $54B to the pentagon that has zero ability in accounting" And do you think those other programs are held accountable? Also, defense spending is constitutional, education and the vast majority of infrastructure isn't. And with education spending you have to realize supply and demand. We lack professors, TAs, tutors, dorms, classrooms, resources, etc. Spending more money is not going to increase that supply to account for the increase in enrollment liberals are demanding. You are just going to raise tuition.
1
Not comparable. We have a large supply of workers in the military. We have a limited supply of workers in education. Spending that $10 billion on education will mean higher tuition.

c Dub, if they have a chance to get more money than schools will increase admissions. My school is doing just that to where we are starting classes are 7:30 now and ending at 10:30. We are also expanding the number of summer courses, night courses, and weekend courses. So universities will find a way just to make more money.

The military is 1. Actually constitutional when it comes to federal funding 2. Actually works due to the employees being highly trained and held accountable, for the most part Now compare that to other federal programs, they are failures.

Joshuakim378, the rest of the world doesn't try to create a defense thus we have too. If we were to cut our defense and tell the world to fend for themselves they will fall apart. "Why not use that money toward rebuilding the country" That is not the federal government's job.
