  1. Jonathan Man Having community colleges is what makes our system great. If you were not able to learn what you need to learn at high school for whatever reason, you have the ability to learn it at the JC level.  Also, there are athletes that are able to attend college when without athletics they wouldn't be able too  It creates diversity and opportunity.

The problem here is free college.  So K-12 is free, that didn't work.  Universal pre-k is being pushed and now free community college.  This is the argument the right makes coming true, how the left just wants more taxes and more government.  There comes a point when that isn't the way to fix things.  Having government isn't bad as long as it serves us and not us serving them.  But the larger you make it the harder it is to control and then government does become the masters and us the servants and not the other way around.

  4. PZ Myers Is Bowman What you learn in community colleges is basically the same things you can learn high school.  They are remedial courses.  In CA around 80% of new college students going to a CC or a JC need to take remedial courses.

  5. Corey Reese In some areas you can't take remedial courses in high school due to lack of resources. I had a friend who was talking physics in high school taught by their one science teacher who was a biology teacher.  It was a school of around 50 students so they just lacked people with knowledge and also funds to hire multiple science teachers.  The other issue is that our public schools suck because of teacher unions who only care about jobs, and the fact that they force children to attend but don't guarantee them anything and don't make school fun.  In several cases you have smart people who don't learn.  CC is a way for them to learn when they are ready.

MasterOfTheHolyFish The material is the same, an advantage of the US education is the diversity and the personal connections between the student and professors.  Smaller colleges lead to that.  Having campuses lead to that.  There are far more instances of that in the US than in other countries.

B Houston Actually Romney won the votes those with a  college degree, so saying that republicans don't want people going to college is not true.  What is ruining public K-12 education are liberal policies such as teacher unions and forcing students to attend with no other options, no desire to go, and no guaranteed success.  The left preaches about more money in education when we spend more than any other country on K-12 education already.  More government and money are not working.

Professors are more liberals (depending on the department) due to lack of experience.  They are very smart in their field but lack experience elsewhere.  You spend nearly a decade getting your PhD, then doing a post-doc, then being a professor and during that entire time you are around people similar to you, you fail to see what goes on in the real world.  As I have said before, liberals don't understand the common man.  They are very smart in their own right, but are also ignorant in a lot of ways.  And I don't say this out of spite, I am pursuing my PhD myself so I actually have first hand experience.
