Insurance is difference because if the government is going to allow you to drive then you are a liability to a degree and must buy insurance. Also, you do not have to buy insurance, you just don't drive.

No, this is mistake. The whole "save in the long run" is something that can be argued with Keynes. He said that we will all be dead in the long run. Also, when the government mandates something prices go up. Solar panels and labor to install them will now skyrocket. So is any money going to be saved?

The cost is questionable. To start, demanding that people buy things will increase the cost due to increase demand. If you ran a company and the government demanded people to buy from your company what will you do? You will raise prices. If the government pushed to keep prices down, such as a law, they you will give a bad service/product. If the government goes beyond that you will shut down your business. Next, saying that people will save money in the long run can be a bad argument. It is argued, by free market capitalists, that in the long run the free market works. Keynes said that in the long run people will be dead. So sure, in the long run we could save money, or not as many factors can change our situation and living in the moment is key.

Lance Wang, it did not go over my head. One, increasing demand will raise prices, period. You saying it will cause prices to drop makes zero sense economically. I guess we should rewrite all of our econ text books. Next, they are saying in the long run. How long? A lot of people cannot wait.

CA has a large economy due to being the largest state (in population) in the country with the top GDP. Alabama has a higher GDP than Iceland. I guess by your standard Alabama is richer than Iceland.

Admiral, if you want to go to GDP per capita Alaska, Connecticut, North Dakota, Delaware, Massachusetts, Wyoming, New Jersey and Washington all have higher GDP per capita. Also, CA has a much higher cost of living than TX where CA is number 1 in poverty, number 1 in income inequality, and number 1 in illiteracy rate.

Daniel, there have been talks of replacing all of our sidewalks and roads with solar panels. Problem is that it is expensive.

Daniel, you have to let the market and society change gradually. Forcing it is where the economy goes to crap for several reasons 1. You end up killing jobs off too soon where many who are in their 30s, 40s or 50s have to find new work 2. Government has no desire to invest wisely as it isn't their money and many politicians are done after a few terms 3. Forcing change raises cost. In this case it will be forcing a change to solar so solar panel prices will go up 4. Forcing change is not efficient as these things take time, have trial and error, and are not tested 5. Many people cannot afford new technology. For example, cars. Many people cannot afford a Tesla or a fancy, expensive hybrid. 6. It creates huge economic uncertainty as investors do not know who the government will favor. There are more but I feel you get the point. We will get more solar panels. We have to let it happen gradually.

platypuss619, TX is in the top 20 in GDP. I believe they are 13th in the world in economic size. CA has a large economy due to fact that it is the largest state in a country with the highest GDP. Some other problems CA has are high income inequality, highest poverty rate, and a low literacy rate.

Auto insurance is a state law. The reasoning behind it is that you are interacting with the public when you drive thus you are a liability to a degree. If you cause an accident you should be able to pay.

Neil Hale, you drive you are a liability. Mandatory insurance is a median to allow people to drive and move freely throughout society but also be held accountable. It is the same as traffic laws, DUI check points, requiring a CCW for carrying a weapon, etc. You drive you have increase chances of causing an accident, causing property damage and bodily harm. If that were to occur you should be able to pay. The way you guarantee that is mandating car insurance.

sabin97, the problem with those numbers is that government always gets these things wrong. They do not account for many factors. For one this program will jack up the price of solar panels as not people are required to buy them by law. If you owned a company and the government forced people to shop at your company what will you do? You will jack up prices. Higher demand means higher prices. As for the electric bill, do the electric companies have the ability to function with these solar panels? If not they need to build facilities which cost money and that money has to come from somewhere. In the long run this program will be fine, but that is in the long run which will be past many people's lifetime.

The cost argument is poor. This law would increase demand of solar panels which jacks up their prices. That's econ 101. Also, saying someone will save money in the "long run" can be countered by what Keynes said, in the long run we will all be dead. You are asking people to pay more for homes when in a few years they could be moving. What do they gain?
