The Glass-Steagall repeal did not cause the recession. Recessions happen and I have a hard time blaming any politician for it. How we recover is key and what was so bad about the 2007 recession was that recovery was slow. That I will blame on Obama and the democrats in congress. But you can't blame people for a recession as they are a part of a progressing economy.

To blame the recession on Glass-Steagal is rather asinine.

Rusty, you clearly did not read the entire source. "The 1999 changes to Glass-Steagall led to much bigger banks, but that was, at best, just one factor in the 2008 financial crisis." As I said, there is a lot to the economy. You are blaming the Glass-Steagall repeal for the recession when there are many other factors. You can't say that the repeal caused the recession as the vast majority of economists will never say that. "But if you understand anything about academia you know that academics don't make grandiose pronouncements about complex issues" I agree, I work in academics as a doctorate student. " The bottom line in my original post was that the Clinton administration laid the groundwork for the worldwide financial collapse due to widespread deregulation of the financial sector" Which is wrong. You are ignoring the complexity of the situation and the economy. What caused the crash in the late 70s? Even Elizabeth Warren said that you can't blame the Glass-Steagall repeal on the recession.
