That saying Kyle is quoting from is Tinker vs Des Moines Independent Community School District, the ruling was this The Court held that in order for school officials to justify censoring speech, they "must be able to show that [their] action was caused by something more than a mere desire to avoid the discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint," allowing schools to forbid conduct that would "materially and substantially interfere with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school." So to add on to my other comment, Kyle is right to a point, but schools can justify making students dress differently.

Legally they can, it just depends. Read Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent Community School District, Bethel School District vs. Frasor, and Hazelwood School District vs Kuhlmeier. No different then a school can search backpacks without a warrant as ruled by New Jersey vs TLO. There is a line where the SC has drawn and as far as I know I agree with it. You have a right to pursue education but you are not guaranteed the right. You have private choices as well to go to. Or you can be home schooled. But in a public school it is a place where the entire public resides and thus certain rules apply. It is the same with DUI laws. While one can argue that you have a 4th amendment right, you are on a public road funded by other people's tax dollars. As long as the rules are enforced equally then there is nothing wrong.
