That is the right answer by Paul, we can't take the extreme on this issue. Totally eliminating one form of energy is destructive to the economy. Over time people will go to the source that is cheaper and better. We are seeing more windmills and solar energy being used. It can't happen overnight, and we can't just allow for the destruction of jobs in this. The problem we have a lot of times in this country is that people are too radical and take the radical approach. And honestly, if we allow the free market to deal with it more than the problem will solve itself.

Windmills are being put in place. We can't get completely off of coal though. The first town to be completely ran off of windmills was Rock Port, MO, a population of 1000 people. Windmills won't be able to completely run a major city. As of now windmills and solar are great for an alternative, but we still need coal. There will always be research in this issue so people don't have to worry about that.

dangerouslytalented Coal is used first because it is still the cheapest and most efficient. Not to say other forms of energy are getting better, but right now coal is still the best. And mines are not all automated, living in a mining state I can tell you there are plenty who work in the mines.

***** That is one of the problems we have in this issue. People think that just because the government passes a law that something will exist. They think that if the government bans coal than somehow workers will exist to develop the solar panels and windmills and make them better. This is why we need to take the gradual approach. Taking the extreme approach does hurt the economy and kill jobs and make people suffer. We will eventually get out of it but it would be unnecessary suffering.

jesushatesyoutoo Coal is not the future, but we are not off it yet. There will be a time where we will be off of coal but until that time comes we can't just force us off of it. Making radical changes like that hurts the economy. We are making progress on alternative energy sources but we can't force it.

dangerouslytalented There are still jobs in coal mining, saying there isn't is a lie. And we are easing off of coal, but we can't force it. What will help this process is relax government regulations. If the federal government were to be less involved than we will see more progress.

dangerouslytalented If you want government legislation on this then do it through the state and local government. The major problem in this issue is that we are allowing the federal government to do it and it is making it political. Through the state and local government you will see better investment and legislation overall.

wolf wing When fossil fuels become expensive due to lack of supply than people will switch to something else.

Robert Maiorana The federal government doing anything on the issue is a big part of the problem.
